In the odulterated pepper case against Hart and Home each defendant was fined. 10s and costs. Dr Giles ruled that it was not uecessary for tho prosecution to show that tho defendants know how the article waß adulterated,
The Barque Peru-
GisBORNE, Jan 18
The Nautical Assessor has inquired into tbe standing of the barque Peru on a reef off Sellott Island- whilst on a voyage from Townsville to Uisborue. The evidence given showed that the Peru left Townsville on the 4th November, At 9 p.m. on the 21st she. struck, the mate, Alexander Tytlcr (since drowned) being in oharge, She was left high and dry at low tide, but got off at high water. The damage amounted to £750. Captain Orr bad boon bolow for half an hour when the accident ocourred, and had told the mate to be caraful not tort too dose in shore. The bnlimi man said he told the mate •ho vessel was going toward the ' rooks nearly twenty minutes before she struck. Tbe Court has reserved its decision till Tuosday. Labor Dispute.
Auokuud, January 18. A number of lumpers discharging tho barque Waimea struck work this morning. A looal merchant, who is the oonsigneo of a quantity of artificial manure on board the vessel, sent down a gang of men to re-bag the manure, which had leaked out, but bb these men were not lumpers, or members of the Lumper's Union the others left their work. They will, howovev, resume on Monday morning, when the labour of the non-union men will have been completed.

A lad named William Edwai Ward Grice was accidentally drowns ill the river whilst batbing alono.

Oapt Samuel Frederick Sewell, who rosided at St Stephen's Avenue, Parnell, blow out his brains with a riflo at 7 a.m to-day. He was formerly in the service of the East India Coy. He leaves a wife and family. Ha was suffering from melancholy mania.
