the opera. . TO TUB EDITOR. Sib.—Who are the vaudals who have circulated the report that the performances of the Opera Company now in Masterton are vulgar, and what ends have they to serve ? It is not often that an inland .town like ours has the good luck to. be visited by a Company whioh is capable of giviug'high class performances, and it is most discreditable that their efforts to cater for public amusement and instruction should inceb with adverse criticism which is based on crass ignorance, I haye seen the three performances which have been given, and I can say without fear of contradiction by linyseiißible person that I haye never witnessed either of fhe tlpe operas presented performed in better tastp. . Masterton Park.. . A meeting of the Park Trustees was held in the (Institute yesterday. Present-rMessrs J; C. Joddingtoii, E. Feist, F, G. Moore, J. Payton and C. E. Brenlner. - Mr Payton was vpted to the olmir, and the minutes oftlie previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £25 is lid. The balance sheet to be submitted to the public meeting was read and adopted, Accounts amounting to. £5 18s'2d were passed for payment. The balance sheet showed receipts, including a balance from last year of £25 4s Cd, amounting to £99 Gs fld. The expenditure amounted to £74 Is 7d and a balance of £25 4s lid was carried forward. The Chairman said six years ago the Trust made provision to pay off their debt of £4OO, Since that time the sum of £2BO had been paid off and he estimated that in four years more the debt would be completely wiped out, In the meantime they would have to keep struggling on and make as few improvements as possible. Mr F. 6, Moore drew attention to the damage done to the Park Oval on the occasion of the Maori Football Match which in the terms of their lease to the Cricket Club it wss the. duty of the Trustees to make good, Re moved that the sum of £2los being half [lie fee charged to'the W. R.F. Union on that occasion be paid paid to the Masterton . Cricket Club towards paying for tho repairs. The motionwas secoud by?Mr Breumer and after somediseussion was carried.
On the motion of Mr Eoddington it "was resolved tliatin future whenever the Park is let for the day an undertaking shall be entered into by tho party hiring to repair whatever damage may bo done to the Trust property. An application was received from the Secretary ol the Wairarapa Jubilee Committee for the use oftlie Public Park on the 22nd January for sports, and for permisson to make a charge for admission at the gates. The request was granted on the usual terms, regret being expressed that the indebtness of the Trust prevented a concession being made that they would under more favorable circumstances have liked to have made.
An application from the same quarter for permission to discharge fireworks iu the Park on the night of Jubileo Day was received, The question was fully discussed,, and the danger, if dry weather set in, of the long grass becoming ignited- aiid the trees burned, Ultimately, it was resolved to grant the request subject to .111 undertaking being entered into by the Captain of the Municipal Fire Brigade to protect the grass from fire,
• A letter was read from tho Secretary of the Phcenix Lodge 1.0.6,T„ urging the Trustees to refuse to allow a booth for the sale of intoxicating liquoss to be ereoted on the Public Park on Anniversary Day on tho grounds that it was a children's gathering, .The Trustees resolved tp accede to the request for the reasons set forth in the application. Tho Photnix Lodge also brought under the notice of the Trustees the desirability of refusing on any occasion to allow the Public Park to be used, for the sale of intoxicatiug drink, Tho consideration of the latter portion of tho letter was held over to a futuro meeting, The ranger was authorised to undertake certain repairs that required attention, and the. Secretary was instructed,to notify the Caledonian Society to clear away tho debris from their New Year's Day gathering. . Authority was given the Chairman to have the park grounds surveyed if it was found necessary for the registration of the title. ANNUAL MEETING. Tho annual meeting of tho inhabitants of Masterton was held yesterday in tho Temperance Hall, for tho purpose, as provided in the Act, of receiving the balance-sheet of the Park Trust for the past year, Mr Payton was voted to the chair, and the Secretary to the Trust read the advertisement convening the meeting. The balance-sheet, duly audited, was submitted to tho meeting, and the transactions being duly confirmed, the business was concluded,
