Phenomenal Application for land at Woodville.

Sixty-five applications for an tinsurveyed section at Woodville, seems rather phenomenal. The scc-nd to last name in the ballot, which was drawn at the oilice of the Hawltes Bay Waste Lands Board on Wed™day morning, resulted in Mr James Sov/ry securingthe section. Although there were such long odds against any quo solootov being successful, it appear that the holder of tlje land] is not yet finally decided, even con- i sidering that the drawing was in favor of Mr dowry. After the drawing had taken place, Mr Horace Baker, qn behalf of several clients, interviewed the Hoard and pointed out that some of the applicants for this land already had perpetual leases, wid that being tbe case they wero not eligible, consequently the wholo of the drawing was void. He wished to raiso tho question before the Board dissolved. The Chairman: Home of tho applicants may have transferred their interests. Mr Baker was confident that some of tho already possessed perpetual leases in the Wellington district. It did not matter if an applicant held no lease in ( J«s Hawke's Bay district, for tho §k laid it down very clearly that a man holding ut perpetual lease in any part of tho colony was not qualified to apply for another, The Board must see that tho whole drawing was affected by this. The Chairman said that unless very clear proof could be brought, he did not see his way to declare ; that the drawing was void, The ? members of the Board had heard what Mr Baker, had to say; were they 1 inclined to entertain the objection ? Mr Hall said that being an applicant himself for tho land, lie would ' not express an opinion on the matter. . Mr Cater Stfggesteflthat tlw Vefitipj)

should uot bo allotted, but that the matter bo postponed until they had timo to onquiro into it. His •object in coming before I lie Hoard was to ( get the case ventilated. ' Colonel Herric!;: It would affect tho drawing very nmtcvially. The Chairman said they did not see how thoy could declaro tho drawing void. He did not know whether morabers had formed an opinion on the ease, but his opinion was that the drawing was satisfactory, and if Mr Baker wished to appeal against this decision he could do so at onco, and the matter would be gone into. The members coincided with the opinion of the Chairman, and the drawing was deemed satisfactory. Mr Baker will appeal against tho decision of the rloard.-'felegraph.
