A Child Burnt to Death, At about S o'clock last night a fire roccurred at Upper Plain, in a fouroomed house owned by Mr Henry Stevens, contractor, Puliiatua, and occupied by Mr Charles G. Cameron, contractor, who was at the Taueru at tlio time. Mrs Mary E, Cameron, the wife states she left the house at 7.90 that evening to go to her sister-in-law's who lives a short distance away, Before leaving she was careful to put out the lire, and she supposed left everything safe. She left her two children, the eldest, a littlo girl not
three years old in the bed, and the baby ot fourteen months in a cot at tho foot of the bed, They were both asleep, She Inw no knowledge of how tho fiie occurred, Sho had been away only what appeared to bo but a few minutes, and was returning when she saw tho reflection of a light in the houso and ran towards the building, which tn her honor she found to bo in flames, She rushed into tho room where she had left the children peacefully slumbering, and saw the bed was on lire, aud 011 taking up her daughter she found her fearfully burned, The baby in the cot was uninjured. She removed the children to her nearest neighbour, Harry Yaughan, and sent for the doctor, Dr Milno was speedily in attendance, and found the child was tooaovorely injured to hope to save it. Its body aud head was terribly burned and the flesh in parts completely roasted, It lingered for a couplo ol hours before its sufferings were ended,
In the meantime tho house and all tho contents wero destroyed nothing whatever being saved, The house was insured in tiie National for £IOO. The occupier's furniture and clothing were uninsured, aiid Mr Cameron's loss, which includes JEGO in money, kept iu tho house, is estimated at £2OO.
The bereaved father, who left for the Taueru ul four o'clock yesterday afternoon, was sent for after the sad occurrence and reached here at an early hour this morning. An inquest on the :hild will bo held this afternoon at Mr Vaughan's house, where the body is now lying. The funeral will take place at 2 ji.m n Weduwday,
