The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1889. Angry Anglers.
At the beginning of this week we wero gratulatmg the local disciples of Isaac Walton on their happiness -m entering upon tho open season, and also on tho prospect of a bountiful aquatic harvest, Wo anticipated that before the week closed smiling fly flyers would be interviewing us with lordly trout, but instead of this angryanglers have come to us with empty baskets, The local anglers have a trouble about which some of them are exceedingly sore. It appears that an edict has gone forth from Wellington, whero tho Aooliumtisation Society meets in council, that the Makora stream in the immediate neighborhood of this town is to bo closed against our persevering piscators and retained as an adjunct to the fish .ponds, At first eight tho arrangement by which a mile or two of a trout stream is reserved as a nursery is a reasonable one, Our fish ponds here are a colonial institution, which havo to provide fish for almost all parts of New Zealand and an increase of business necessitates more extended accommodation, But on the other hand, there are a number of persons, old and young, in Masterton who havo caught the fishing fever badly, taken out licenses and feel that they have a sort of pre-emptive right to whip the Masterton streams, Their ordinary business avocations do not give them lime or opportunity to go far afield for their pleasure; they must take it in the immediate vicinity of the t.oj/n or go without. Such persons do not regard with equanamity tho mopping up for nurseries of the little patches of water ill which they havo' been wont to take their sporf, and regard the recent acton of the Wellington Committee with considerable disfavor. The act, too, of closing streams is infectious, and it is said that land holders on tho Waipoua are about to issue an edict in their turn against trespass. If they do, the two streams which havo hitherto been mainly rolieed upon by Masterton anglers are practically closed to honest fishiug. We say honest fishing, heeause we feel assured that if this bo discouraged poaching will take its place. Our sympathies are with tho genuine disciples of Isaac Walton who hays been accustomed to snatch an occasional hour from the mill round,of business and domestic ditties, and spend it on the banks of tho streams hi the immediate neighborhood of the town, and wo shall be only too glad to assist Jjiera in retaining privileges which they hayo been wont to enjoy, and which it is only right they should possess, Wo understand' some of them havo in contemplation the formation of a Masterton Acciimat.isatioi> {Society, so that the control of ti)o streams jn
this neighborhood would pass from Wellington into local hands. It is possible under the Act, to', constitute a new district, though there would certainly be difficulties in the way of such it project, but wo smcowly trust so extreme a remedy for a grievance will not become necessary. Perhaps the managers of the existing Association will take into consideration the difficulties under which anglers in this town have to pursue their pastime, and make their own arrangements for breeding in such a way that they do not vob poor town anglers of their favorite bits of water. We would like to see the existing Acclimatisation Society working pleasantly and harmoniously with the Masterton Anglers Association, so that the angry anglers, who hardly know where to turn to catch a fish, may onco moro bring in trophies and wear smiling countenances. Wo do not understand the mysteries of the craft sufficiently to indicate how the difficulty .which has arisen moy bo best arranged, but wo feel certain that r. solution of it is possible if due consideration is given to the wishes of local sportsmen as well as to the needs of the hatching establishment.

A pretty little story about the siege ol Paris by tho Germans in 1870 has just come tolight. Duriut> tho bombardment ot the city the shells began to fall dangerously near tho Jardin des Plantes, where M. Chevreul had his labatory, Fearing that irreparable damage might be done to tho cause of soionco, that gentleman indicted a letter to the Kaiser Wilheliu, in which he pointed out tho facts, and requested that the guns might bo pointed in another direction. Tins, it is said, was at once done by tho German authorities, showing that they were by no means the barbarians, bent only on destruction, that many writers would have tho public believe.
