Torpedo has been scratched for the Caulfield Cup. Masterton Town Lands Trust The ordinary monthly meeting of Trustees was held last night. Present —Messrs Henall (in the chair) McEwen and Graham. An apology was received from Mr Lowos for iioii-attondance, The minutes of the provious meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer roported a credit balance of £25 7a 7d. Tho Seoretary said the new Act corning into operation had caused two vacancies on the Trust Board and ho had advertised an election to fill tho vacancies.
Tlio following telegram was read from Sir George Grey:—" Grateful for thanks of Trustees, Governor lias assented to the Bill." The sub-oommittco appointed to confer with the committee of the Borough Council on the question of diverting the creek running through Town Aero 72, recommended the Trustees contribute the sum of £2O, provided the lessee, of the land pays LlO towards the work, A memo from Mr Lowos gave his opinion that if a sanitary nuisance existed the Borough Council as the sunuary authority should call upon tlio lesseo to abate it. Until that was done the Trustees had no right to interfere in anyway, atid except as a sanitary nuisance the Trustees had no right to enter on the property to divert the stream. The Chairman said the .Borough Council having given notice to property owners abutting on the stroam to clean it out, it would be better to await the result before the Trusteos vote any sum of money tor the work. On tlio motion of Mr McEwen the report was held over tq (bo next regular meeting, The Secretary reported that the iunds arising from town acre 42,10G ana 111 amounted to £8512 aon the coming into operation of the now Aot. That the proportion for each school would bo Eoman Catholic school, attendance 70, L 7 lCs; Fernridgc school, attondanco 98, L 9 lCs; Mastortou State schools, 680, LOB. He also stated that the resolution passed at the last meeting only referred to tho Fernridgo and Mastorton State school, and it would be necessary to altor that resolution if it was desired to include tho Catholic sohool. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Graham seconded by Mr McEwen. that the amounts stated in the report be paid over to the Masterton and Fernridgo school Committoes for prizes, and that the balance £7 Is (id be held over- till next meeting, Mr McEwen gavo notice of motion for next meeting to hand ovor the sum of £7 Is 6d to the Catholic school for prizes. An application was received from Mr E, M. Galloway for permission to transfer his interest in certain leases to Mrs Galloway. The request was agreed to.

A Narrow Escape. The scaffolding at a new building in course of erection in Bourkostreet, Molbourno collapsed suddenly A last wool, three men narrowly cscap-T ing instantaneous death. The scaf- ' folding was erected in the wall reserved for tho staircase. A laborer named M'Culloch had just emptied a barrow load of plaster on t!:e platform, some fifty feet from the pavement, when tho staging suddenly collapsed, and before he could gain a place of safety the heavy ma6s of beams and woodwork crashed down into the well, cantfnjjjcCulloch with it m its fall. The whole mass collapsed on the top of an engine situated in the basement, and used for hauling material to tho summit of tho building. Tho engine-driver (a man named Featoitdy) and the clerk of the work (Mr Burcholl) wore standing by the engiuo at the time of the collapse, aud were buried beneatlraA vast heap of broken planks and br«gand mortar. M'Oulloch. who layon the top of tho ruins, sustained p. fracture of tho right thigh; tho other two men having their legs badly fractured. Peatondy and Burchell were so deeply buried that it was an hour before they were extricated.
