Hid (Jiocesan Synod, after relegating the clioico of a Bishop for Chnstelnircli to the Committee to report upon, adopted their recommendation to elect Archdeacon Churchill Julius, of Ballarat, to the sacred office. The voting wasClergy—ayes, 45; noes, 2; laity—ayes, 37; noes, 1.

The Kovanui is valued at £IO,OOO, and is insured for £2OOO in the Colonial office, the balance being underwritten by the Union Company. A SHOOTING AFFAIR. The Time 3 reports a remarkable affair, which subsequent events may develop into a tragedy, took place at Wadestown between 2 and 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, It appears that Jolm Andrew Smith, a young man about, 21 years of age and a resident in that locality, was driving some cows belonging to his uncle, Mr Stevort Morton, along a road which bas been formed but not fenced, when he was accosted by an elderly man named Thomas Boyps Gambrill. Gambrill we believe is living on land at Wadestown owned by Mrs Maxwell, through which the road passes, and the difficulty between tlio parties concerned in some way the right of Smith to drive cows along the road, It is alleged Gambrill had with him adoublebarrelled gun, and that after a siiort argument he slio' one of the cows, wounding but not killing it; that on Smith remonstrating Gambit] turned upon him and Bred at him also, the chargo lodging in the young man's leg, just above tlio knee, and then, reloading, Gambrill shot the cow dead, Meanwhile Mr Morton, Smith's uncle having heard tho first shot fired, came out of his house in time to seo Gambrill shoot at the young umn, and the latter fall, He at once van to the spot, lifted Smith up and carried him to the honso of Mr Dawson. Having left his nephew there, Mr Morton came into town and obtained the assistance of Dr Martin, who went out immediately. Mr Morton also gave information to the police. Dr Martin found that paits of .the muscles of Smith's leg had been shot away, and upon the doctor's advice the young man wasjremoved with all expedition to the Hospital, where ho now lies in a precarious condition, Had the charge lodged half au inch higher an artery would have been cut, and death from loss of blood must have ensued,
Gainbrill was arrested by Detective Kirby and Campbell. Later.—Gamlirill, who is in custody on a charge ot' shooting, asserts it was accidental, His story is that Smith attempted to assault him with a piece of wood, A struggle ensued. Smith caught hold of the barrels of his gun, and in attempting to wreslle it from accused's grasp it went off, Gainbrill, who is an elderly man, was remanded for a week. Smith, who is a young man about twenty-one years of age, is progressing favourably,
Hanging a Maori. Named, Saturday, Makaoro Mahi, the murderer, was executed this morning, He took a final farewell of his three children at 0 a.m. Ho made no confession, but from from liis refusal to partake of the sacrament yesterday, lest he should have to say something before he died, it was inferred that he contemplated confessing. This morning the sacrament was administered, and when asked whether he would like to oonfcss, he said he had confessed to his God, Ihcro was a very small attendance at the execution.
