The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, SEPT 28, 1899 The Trout Season.

Next week the fishing season begins and a hundred anglers, or would-be anglers, are preparing for the gentle craft with eager expectation. Tho sufferings of some of them during the close season have been acute, because when a disciple of Isaac Walton once becomes initiated into the mysteries of luring the wary trout lie is unhappy unless he is half way up to his knees ;,n water, It is reported that the supply uf .fish will be satisfactory this season, for haV5 .not the local enthusiasts been watching tiio Streams so dear to them for weeks past, ana they speak favorably of tho trophies whicli may be secured on and after the Ist of October, Honest fishing will never exhaust tho supplies, for, as one angler expressed himself last season, tho trout are able to tike care of themselves, mid if thei'o be any sorrow it is not for the fish but for tho men who are not clever enough to catcli thorn. Of all kinds of sport, perhaps fishing is most to be commended. It is not only a healthy and innocent pastime, but it also develops qualities of skill and patience in its votaries, and at the same time it furnishes to the community a very valuable food supply, which is more nutritious and wholosoinp, than either saltwater fish or much ol t|)P carcase meat which finds its way to our tables. Till our rivers are lully stocked, it is of course somewhat of a "luxury. Probably last season's gross takings did not amount to mor6 than one or two thousand pounds weight of trout, and tins in a populous town liko Mwterton is little more than one or two all round meals; but when some of the larger streams like tho Ruiniahunga teem, as they speedily will, with myriads of fish, the live weight brought to table roll be increased by ten and twenty fold, One good work which our local Augte Associate!! may accomplish is the keeping pf streama in this neighborhood free from pollution. So. far their best energies have been directed to minimize the illicit operations of poachers and dynamiters, and we trust that in this direction they have {ought offenders a lesson. The worst enamy of the trout, bjwever, is the filth that is allowed to be deposited in the streams,

destroying not only tbo pleasure of the angler, but also prejudicing tbo health of the town by depriving young people in the summer time of the piiro water in which they are wont to bathe, Sympathy with local industries has been carried so far as to allow a mile or so of the Waipoua to be poisoned with refuse in the iminediato neighborhood of the town. As such pollution is illegal, as well as injurious, wo should bo glad to see some stand made against it. If our Anglers Association should interest themselves to maintain the purity of the running water in the neighborhood, it will confer a benefit on the community.

In a letter addressed to the late public meeting re rabbits, Mr Coleman Phillips, a Justice of the Peace said/ also told Mr Harris himself that I would, ralkr go upon the Bench myself, or appear as a witness for him, so as to prevent his again being fined, and I am very glad the R.M. dismissed the ease." If Justices of the Peace are wont to go on to the Bench to prevent penalties being inflicted under Acts of Parliament, the sooner they are relieved of their Judicial functions the better I

Anglers are notified that in this part of the mill stream fishing is Btvictly prohibited. ThoSociety trusts that tho public generally will assist in seeing that this necessary restriction is respected.

Wo remind ourreadera tlwt Itobson's panorama, on modern naval warfare will bo shown in tlio Theatre Royal, Masterton this evening. Tlio panorama was shown in Featherston on Thursday evening last, when, in spite of a continuous downpour of rain, the hall was well filled, Tlio opinion appeared to he unanimous that the show iros the best of the kind yet seen in Featherston, and a general desire expressed for its repetition. MrKobson has decided to repeat tho ontertainment in that plaoe on Tuesday evening next.

Mr J. Williams has received tlio war. rants undor the lnnd of Sir 11, Atkinson for the Rangers appointed within tho Wellington Acclimatisation district under the Fisheries Conservation Act Messrs A, A, White, W, lorns, R, Campbell, 0. Why these hysterics ? Are tliey because Mrs Sullivan is more of a blackguard than lio represented or loss > Aro tho Presbyterian Ministers angry beeauso he is not a "Convortod' 1 priiotakor, or why ? Ono of the Chriatoliurcli paper has been following tho matter np by cabling to Melbourne, and has columns of delirious slush with displayed head lines containing tho opinions of Melbourne's "leading epoiiin" men" on tho subject ot Sullivan's identity, If tl)o paper in question designs to advertise the man it is certainly taking the very best stops so to do. Tho cruellest and at the same time the most effective tliiin; would have been to liavo left Sullivan or Clampett alone. As it

is, tlw paper alluded to is going tlio right way to allow this enterprising prize-fighter with a taste for preaching to poso as a martyr. 'When shall wo learn to accept theso imported prophets with ,1 shovelful of salt? What , with grovel to lioucicault, adornation of Sala p,nd adulation and thou persecution of Sullivan, thoughtful people are becoming tired. We New have one at least of the characteristics of the picn of Athens of old—wo aro always runpint'after some new thino. Hence theso tears?—Oatholjc Tjnicß,

A Chicago telegram says;—" Little tivo-year-old Sophie Schwab involuntarily became a balloonist to-day, and was wafted Inch up over tho broad bosom of Lake Michigan. A rifleman's skill saved the child's life. Tho exciting incident took place at Sclioflield Park,

and was witnessed by 1500 picnicers, All Italian pedlar of toy balloons attempted to servo two purchasers at unco and in doing so let co his string of bright-coloured globes. The cord got twisted about Sophie's loft arm and also in her hair, and tlio buoyant rubber hubbies started heavenward, takin? tho youthful aeronaut along, Sophie's mother ahriokod and fainted, Tlio bybystanders stood horror stricken, scarcely breathing,as tho balloons swept close to a largo oak tree and tho infant grasped a handful of twi.:>s and checked her flight. A muscular young German was ascending the tree in an instant, and then crept out on tho branch nearest tho child. At this moment Sophie's puny strength gavo out and the balloons, suddenly released, went again upward at least 100 ft, drifting then over tho lake. Gus Kocli, a sharpshooter who was attending tho picnic with his repeating rifle, hurriedly jumped into a skiff, with t\yo companion's, and pulled out into range, Keck succeeded in piercing sevoraj of the balloons, a successful iliot helping the bunch to descend, Boforo it finally reached tho water, a boat was at the spot, and little Sophie didn't oven net her feet wet,"

St, Michael's Cheater squavo, witnessed recei.tly tlio unusual ceremony of the formal recoption of a convert to tlio OlfUrph of England from the communion of Romp, The lady who thus transferred her allowance vas ill?|ri "Wilhelmina Zajicek. A special form of service had been drawn up for tlio occasion, in tlio course of which tho convert was asked a tew questions, tho njost important of which were;—" How many sacraments do you hold!" and" Do you desiro to be admitted into the Church of England' believing it to be tho Church which is most in accordance with tho word of God?" To the first the convert replied, "Two only, as necessary to salvation, bap'.isui, and the Supper of tho Lord," and to tho second an emphatic "I do," Canon Floming preached tho sermon, It was stated that th 6 now proselyto, who was subsequently the recipient of warm congratulations, had derived hc.t convictions from a three jw' attendance at th.o church. Albert Cull and Andrew Wylie, who did not put 111 an appearanco wero fined in, with costs 7s. An application by Mr Kenall lor mitigation of the penalty indieted on him on August l(ith was adjourned to next Bitting. Tho Masterttm correspondent of the Now Zealand Times makes the following serious charge against Mr lienall which, if tvu», indicates there has been a deliberate effort to burke the administration ot justice by nwhbing tiie Bench with rabbit-proof Justicus of the Peace. Tho following is tho extract from hia letter ivhich contains the allegation "Mr Ronall, J.P., delivered a speech at tho rabbit meeting last night in which he denied my statement that the meeting of Justices held at Carterton on Saturday had been called for tho purpose of considering tho course pursued by the Resident Magistrate with regard to tho Rabbit Act. As Mr Renall was one of tho promoters of that meeting, he should, 110 doubt, know something about it. I had the best authority for writing what I did. and his explanation that tho meeting was called merely to consider tho rabbit question necessarily appears unsatisfactory 111 faeo of tho fact tlmt a public meeting had been advertised for some time to considcrthe same question. But in Mr Rentll's own words the meetin? of Justices was cor.voned "to consider what steps can bo taken to assist Colonel Roberts in tho adinmstration of the Rabbit Act," and tho assistance was meant to tako the farm, of Justices sitting regularly 011 tho Bench whenever rabbit eases wore to be heard. 1 am sorry that Mr Ronall should have compelled 1110 to writo this, but I certainly cannot allow him to place himself in whatovor light 110 pleases at tho expense of my voracity." A burglar who had made his way into a house in the Denniston district, Glasgow, tho other night, was cau?ht in a singular way. His entry disturbed a parrot which was confinod in a cage in its master's bedroom, and which began to vociferate all the phrases it had learned, interspersing them with discordant shrieks. It master wolto in astonishment, jumped out of bed and struck a light, when 110 found the burglar in tho room with his boots olf, standing amazed at tho parrot's behiviour. He was secured and 'liarohed off to tho police stataion. iio had , climbed up a water-pipe, and then 1 entered by tho bed-room window, which 1 was unfastened, when Hie parrot's ■ vigorous protests prevented his further 1 operations.

Much uneasiness is being caused to persons whom tho Shall recently lionour.d with Persian dignities by ugly rumors tjint these decorations have been bestowed with a lavishness which destroys all their valuo. It is even reported (says tho London correspondent of the Sheffield Telegraph) that minor tradesmen aro among the fortunate recipients of these orders, and some sensation was caused the other evening at a well-known place of amusement by tho appearance of tlio green ribbon 011 the bodico of a premiere daiiscksc. A great deal of scaudaj afoso in Vienna a fow yeara ago by the discovery that a Persian kept an agenoy there for the sale of orders of the Lion and Sun, and 1 have in my possession a price list, issued by an English house, giviiij the names and market valuo of somo 500 ordoru of knighthood, acadomical honors, memberships of various learned societies, fa., among the orders being that of the Lion and Sun, which was to bo had for £#l

Commenting upon tlio new dnties imposed in Victoria, the Argus of the 4th instant writes;—" Wearing apparel was further taxed Yesterday, The duties 011 buots wore heavily increased. Moil's boots are now charged LI IDs per dozen, and in tutiiro they will be L2 os per dozen, Youths' boots ate increased from LI Is to LI 10s. Women's boots aro increased from 19s 6d to LI 8s 6d, and women's stuff hoots aro promoted from 13s to IDs. Buckets and tubs were taken from the free list and awarded 25 per cent, Clnuawaro and porcelip were obtained an additional o'pep cent, nioro thaji the fJorermnent had awarded as a fair thing, It may be doubted whether theso impositions live calculated to make tlio poor man's shilling go further than before, or whether homes with limited incomes will bo made more cheerful thereby, And whore the dovolopment of local resources comes in—the object which in a now country is to bo always kept in view —it is hard indeed in most the cases to say."

Wo take tho following flora the Sporting News of St Louis, United States;—" On June 17, at Sportsman's Park, H. M, Johnston attempted to eclipso some of his jumping records, without weights, The weather was splendid, and bverything favourable for record-breaking, The two, three and fiyo standing jumps wero done on the third baso lino of tlio Brown's diamond. The others wore aceqmplished 011 tho grass noar tlio grand stand. Following are tho records: Two standing jumps, 22ftGJin;22ft4Jin; 22ftGJin. Three standing jumps, 33ft 9in; 34ft4}in; 34ft lHin: Five standing long jump 3, 55ft 10m ; 66ft 2in; 57ft lOin. Twelve pound dumb bells were used." It is not Btated whether theso performances wore accomplished in practice jumping, or in announced trials against tho .record and undor the supervision of regularly appointed and thoroughly, competent officials,.\yhoso presonge is necessary to tho making of records. It is_ announced at Lord Randolph Churchill lias hecome a newspaper proprietor in Birmingham, England. Tho Woman's Journal has found a Missouri woman farmer who sensibly performs her outdoor work in men's clothes.
