During the season nine matches wore played, 7 won and!! lost; of this number tho Second Eleven played 6, all of which wero won, The Senior Eleven mot the Wellington Stars who' gained a victory by 3 runs only on the first inning); they also met the Masterton eleven twico, both very pleasant matches, one of which. was lost and the other gained, At the ond, ot the season the Secretary of the Carterton Club revealed the true reason why they bad not accepted the challenge sent by tho Greytown team. Ho writes under date February 20th: -" I am sorry wo havo not been able to meet your First before, but you have only jouraelves to blame, you should have joined the Association." A friendly challenge was sent to the Associate! o» r/eljvpry 2Cth, inviting them to play a matoli with us a njonth later, viz,, 20th' March. tee does not feel called upon to interfere with the Association fixtures lor that Club's benefit." Tlicso are tokens of the affectionate regard and esteem which nro felt by the Association and Carterton Cricket Club towards the Grcytown Club, which, so for as I oan see, has Riven no grounds for such hostile manifestations, I think I may say, gentlemen, that wo did not hopo to derivo any benefit from (lie match with an cloven from the Association, beyond tho pleasure of a friondly intercourse with our neighbours which tho match would have afforded us, Eliowhere wo hear ot boycotting or coercion with all their attendaut evils and discourtesy, but itßesmsio ma that there is.no need to. travel outsido tho limits of tho Wairarapa to find cases of such conduct. There is an amusing feature in tho oaso, however, I mean the absurdity of any combination of cricketers playing so called Champion Matches and claiming tin honor of being Champion club, &c., so long as there is one Club which they avoid trying conclusions with, by every moans fn their power, Tho Seorclary concluded Mb report by thanking ■ the publio for their liberal support in the past, and Mr Wobstcr for undertaking tho duties of Secretary during his six weeks absence from Groytown. The Club is also indebted to him in his capaoity as auditor.
