THE MASQUERADE BALL.
The masquerade ball in aid of Pearson's Band uniform fund at tho Theatre Uoyal last night was a marked success. .For weeks the local costume makers have been fully occupied in making up novelties in fancy dress and historical costumes. It can readily be understood that after spending timo and money in preparing for the eagerly looked for event, the Jovers of dancing who decided upon going to this special ball were not be deterred by an ordinary downpour, The floor was occupied by between forty and fifty couples, nearly all of them being in fancy dress. Tho most noticoablo in the large assemblage wore tho Daughter of the Regiment, Starlight, Music, Ainit Sal and Aunt Maria, Buttercup, Red Hiding Hood, Lady of Seventeenth Century, Flower Girl, Nancy Lee, Chinaman, Mano' War's Man, Policeman, Army Officer, Niggers, Page, Grosvenor, Clog Dancer, Jockey, Pirates, Cavalier, Indian, and numerous others. The evoning was most enjoyably spent, There was excellent music provided by Pearson's Band, Mr Keisenborg, and Misses J. and A, Corbett and Toohill. Messrs C. A. Pownall, A. Thompson, and E. H. Eton made very efficient M.'J.'s. The dress circle was crowded with onlookers, and the many matrons appeared to take as lively an interest in the proceedings as those who wore actively participating therein on the floor below, Dancing was kept up with spirit until the conclusion of tho programme at half past three o'clock, The excellent and plentiful supply of refreshment tended in no small measure to the thorough success of tho evening, and the committee of management received that credit which was their just duo.
