EKETAHUNA.
(From Our Own Correspondent,) Mondav. Since Tuesday last we have had a continuous downpour of rain, varied occasionally by heavy hailstorms and high winds, There seems to be plenty of snow on tho ranges again; on the whole it is quito a cltange from summer to. winter.
One of the most extraordinary ovonts that ever 1 heard of occurred on Friday last to a man named Alfred Shell. It appears that the man was proceeding from here to Aifredton to look for work, and had got about ten miles on his way at a part of tho road called che swamp, when he suddenly sank up to his thighs, The poor follow made desperate efforts to extricate himsolf, without success, Night coming on and no one passing or within hearing, ho thought l)o would have to remain thore and die, At last to his great joy ho saw a horaoman approach. He intended to draw his attention to his unfortunate position, but tho horßeman passed round him and proceeded on liis journey without any attempt to help him in any way, so tho poor fellow remained, gradually sinking deeper and deeper, till the arrival of Mr Stophen Harding and his brother, These two gentlemen immediately set to work with their hands and a piece of board to dig him out, but not beforo, by their united efforts, they had failed to drag him out). When the man was got out it was found that he had lost the use of his legs and was almost speechless. He was taken by those gontlomen to Mr Macquarie's whero every attention was paid him. Tho constable boing informed of tho precarious state of the man.immediataly proceeded to Macquarie's. On his arrival there he found that the man was ablo tp talk, hut that ho had lost the Use, of his legs. The constable is now trying to get the man brought in here, to be convoyed to the Masterton Hospital, having received an order from Mr Von Reden to that effect. It is known that Shell had been stuck in the road for 20 hours,
There was no concert on Saturday night on account of tho weather. It was put oft to Monday night, The Road Board will meet on Monday night to open tenders for the Makakahi bridgo contract.
