The Maybnck Case.

London, August 13,

It is reported that Sir James Stephen lias intimated to the authorities that be will resign his position on the Bench in the event of tho condemned woman, Mrs Mayhrick being reprieved. Driciiey, whoso improper intimacy with Mrs Mayhrick was brought forward as a motive for poisoning her husband, deuies a statement made to the effect that he expßnded £4OOO defending her during her trial. The Executive have given consideration to tho case of Mrs Mayhrick, and havo arrived at the conclusion that they would not be justified in granting

a reprieve, and the sentence of death will therefore be carried into effect. The execution is fixed to take place on the 27th inst.

Important Income Tax Decision. London, August 13. The Privy Council lias decided an important point relating to tho collection of income tax upon incomes realised in the colonies. The Council held that the tax can only be churned on the profits realised in Euglaud, and not on tho whole profits realised in tho colonies, The cuse arose out of an appeal, Colquhoun v Brooks, tho hitter being a Victorian merchant residing in England. The Times oulogises the action of the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords in dismissing the appeal. The Times says:—"lt is contrary to the courtesy of nations to tax a colonial income, unless tho money is remitted to England."
