EKETAHUNA.
(From Our Own Correspondent), A very large and influential ajeeting was held in Mr Parsons' ilall on Friday, August 16th, to take into consideration the advisableness of urging on the Government to place on the estimates a sum of money to open up a road west to connect Eketahuna with Shannon,
Mr Bayliss (chairman), in opening the meeting said:—Gentlemen, I need not point out to you tlio great importance' of the proposed road lo this district. When I first came to Eketahuna I made the observation that this town would be an important centre, Wil'i thoie few remarks I call on Mr Von Reden to address the
meeting, Mr Von Eedon: Gentlemen, Yon are aware that the people ou the othor side of the range Lave taken up the subject of the proposed road, I think a g'eit injustice has been done to Eketahuna by the Government, arid I think it is about time that wo took action in the matter. I beg to move thuc a rotition be forwarded to Government (through our member, Mr Smith), that the Government place a sum of money on the estimates to make a road west to Shannon, Petition read.
Mr Bright: Is there any road surveyed. Mr Von Keden: No survey has been made, hut I have been informed that there is no difficulty in tho way. The motion was then put and, carried unanimously. Proposed by Mr Yon Rcden that the petition be forwarded to Mr Smith on Monday next. Carried, The petition was then presented for signatures, Mr Parsons said : I am very pleased to see sucb a strong meeting. I propose that it is the wish of this meeting that the Government be urged to continue the line to Woodville as soon as funds are available. Seconded by Mr Kelliher and carried.
Mr Von Eeden read a speech of tho Premier re tho Eketahuna-Woodville extension and denounced tho Government as fostering private enterprise, to the detriment of public interest. The question u£jain cropped up ro Magistrate's Court, It was unanimously decided that auother petition be forwarded to tho Minister of Justice on the subject. Mr Parsons: At a former meeting ra starting a butter factory, a committee was appointed. Has there beers anything done in tho matter ? Who aro the committee? A Voice: Yon are one. "Then I forgot all about it," _Mr Syverson: I am ono of the committee, and I saw several owners of cows, but not ono of them wore in favor of a factory, Votes of thanks were given to the Chairman, to Mr Von Kcden, and to Mr Parsons for tho use of the hall.
