A Road Board to be forced
down, (Tho Editor oftlio Wamabapa Daily]
Sm.—Hearing that there was a Debating Society in Eketahuna, and that settlors were allowed in free, I mado it ray business to attend. Tho time of meeting I was told was 7,30. At that time there was not one member present, but at eight o'clock five or six walked in, I asked a gentleman present what was up, and lie said lie could not understand himself. There seemed a sort of clique that for the last four weeks had taken the control ot tho Society in their own hands, and as a consequence nearly all the members had left. At 8,15 someone requested tho Chairman toopenthemoetiug, which he did, but there was 110 Secretary, and no minutes, Everyone looked rather glum. I waited, rather impatient to know what wtis coming next, The Secretary walked in at this time and read over something or other, supposed to be the minutes of the last meeting. After that was done with, the Chairman oalled upon someone to opon the debate, The secretary read a few words on the subject, then the trouble seemed to commence, for no one seemingly cared anything about it, After some desultory conversation on the subject th'e debate closed, subject was attempted l)i\t failed.. Now came tho climax to this extraordinary meeting. The Chairman read a petition that he stated was given' to him by the proprietors of some paper begging the signatures of the members, and said i the petition set forth that tlloEJiGtabuna Eoad Board should becompelled to {jive their'printing to the petitioners. One gentlemau indignantly protested against the Society being used for such a purpose as newspaper squabbles. I was toll] before'l attended thg xqeetjog Vfeat I should hear something that would surprise me; well, I was surprised.
