Eketahuna Road Board.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board was held on Saturday last Present: Messrs Anderson, (chairman), Neilsen, Bright, Matheson arid Morris. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence inwards—From J. Pay ton & Co requesting the Board to re-consider its action in reference to the advertising of the Board. From Chairman Mauriceville Eoad Board arranging to meet the Chairman of this Board to confer on revision of boundaries. From Mr Janet re bushfalling on Smith's line, From ProProperty Tax Commissioner advising passing voucher for Crown Lands rates, From sams advising the Crown would pay rates for current year on lands taken up by the Hutt Special Settlement Association, From MrPownall requesting the Board not to pay any money on accouut of j Messrs McGill and Mcßarron's conI tract except to Mr McGill. From Treasury ro payment of interest on loan. From • .Receiver of Lands Beyenue staling no funds were available at present from thirds from Hutt Special Settlement block. From M, Neilson giving notice of his intention to move that the resolution giving the printing to the Eketahuna and Pahiatua Mail be rescinded, From E. W. Gotcli re loan for Wellington No 1 block. From J. Clulow requesting a return of accrued thirds in Hawera road east district, From P. Mcßarron requesting that the balance of McGill and Moßarron's contract be paid to him. From W. F. Barraud requesting that the thirds accruing to his section might be expended by the Mauricevillo Boad Board. From Commissioner of Crown Lands requesting explanation re the Board's proposals for expenditure of accrued thirds. From County Clerk requesting use of Board's office for holding a meeting of ratepayers, From Eichmond and Eicbmond re loan for Wellington No 1 block, From Paymaster General advising bayment of £lßlßs 3d, Crown lands rates, From Bank of New Zealand acknowledging receipt of same. From same acknowledging receipt of £l2 8s lOd.
It was resolved that no order b accepted by the Board henceforth 01 contractors.
That the Clerk ascertain the views of the Wellington selectors re date of poll, Mr Neilson moved that the resolution passed at the last meeting to givo the advertising tn Mr Butcher for a trial be rescinded, and that the former resolution of the Board giving it to tho Waibabapa Daily, be adhered to. Mr Bright seconded the motion, An amendment by Mr Anderson, seconded by Mr Morris, That the subject be held over for one month was lost. Mr Neilson's resolution was then put and carried, Tho Engineer stated he had examined the timber reoovered from the wreck of the Makakahi bridge. As far as ho could judge thero were about 18,000 ft.' available out of 81,000 ft, of timber. There was not much of the ironwork lost perhaps about £6 worth.
Mr Morris asked tho Engineer what was the cause of the accident. The Engineer replied that there was an evident want of knowledge on tho part of the contractor as to the class of work, and not sufficient care taken in getting one truss only Oil at a time. Tho stago must havo given warning'when it lost its camber It precaution had beon fcnkon when tho camber was done by bracing it and strengthening it the accident would not havo happened, always provided that one truss was got on at a time.
Resolved that a special meeting be held nest Saturday at 7 o'clock. The Clerk was instructed to have the bonds and securities placed in tho hands of Mr Beard to onforce.
Resolved that ,Mr Burling be informed that if the entrance to his ground bo complied with it will bo lone at tho Board's expense, Resolved that the Clerk attend to Ibo revision of boundaries,
Resolved that Mr King and Mr Bright inspect the site oftlio bridge over the Makakahi and report at next meeting, Mr Matheson handed in account for work done in his distriot, Approved, i
Mr Tyler waited on the Board re jotting a crossing over the Deep Jreek,
The Chairman stated that ho had engaged Mr Murrell to separate the timber taken out of the river for the Engineer to inspect, for the sum of ten shillings,—Approved, Mr Murrell applied for the sum of ten pounds on account of work done in getting the debris of Makakahi Bridge from the river. Granted, the balance to be paid on completion of contract.
