(From Our Own Correspondent), Miss Fretby, I hear, has tendered her resignation to the Eketaliuua School Committee, We aro all very sorry to b6ar that this lady is leaving the district, During tho time sho has been here Miss Fretlmy has gained she respect and esteem of every resident in the district, The Good Templars and the Church party will feel her. loss, Since the formation of the 1.0.G.T Lodge,, no one has done more than Miss Frethy to promote harmony in tho Society, As a teacher sho was almost worshipped by her scholars. On leaving, Miss Frethy will tako with her the best wishes of the residents of Eketahuna and surrounding district, LOANS. A meeting of ratepayers was held on' Saturday last at the Eketahuna Road Bobrd Office, Mr von Reden in the chair, ro loan for formation of the road through Eketahuna township, aud to fix the date of the poll. Proposed by Mr Parsons that the poll be taken on Thursday, the Bth day of August, between the hours of 9 a.ni and 5 p.m on Thursday, the Bth day of August, between tho hours of 9 a,m and 5 p,m, at the Road Board Office. Carried. It was also decided that the money aocruing from sale of frontages be spent in making footpaths, the said paths to be nine feet wide,
The Koad Board met on Saturday. Present, Messrs Anderson (chairman) Matheson, Neilson,Briglit,aiid Morris.
Mr Neilson moved that the former resolution giving advertising to the Mail be rescinded and that tho work be given to the Daily, In speaking to tho motion, he stated that the Roard had been misled by Mr Butcher, that the Eketahuna and Pahiatua Mail was not a local paper and Mr Butcher was not the proprietor. In Bupport of his statement he showed to tho members several papers printed by Smith find Hogg; one, tho Star of tho 12th, when compared with the Mail of the 13th, proved to bo alike, word for word, except in name and date, He also read a prospectus issued by Smith and Hogg in support of his contention that the Eketahuna Mail was owned by Smitn and Hogg, Mr Bright seconded the motion, Mr Matheson also spoke in favor of the motion,
An amendment proposed by Mi Morris, seconded by the chairman, that tho question be adjourned foi one month, was lost.
Mr Neilson's motion was then pul and carried.
MAKAKAHI BRIDGE, The Engineer, Mr King, said that be had examined the the timber on the site of the bridge and he found that there was only eighteen thousand out of thirty-two thousand feet fit for use. A large quantity of the ironwork was also damaged, Mr Neilson: Will you explain, Mt Kinfl r vm» thoorj- of tho cause of tho accident,
Mr King: There seems to me an evident want of knowledge of the class of work on the part of the contractor, No man understanding the work would leave a thing that was evidently giving way, three or four days without strengthening it. There ensued a long discussion between Mr Bryant and the Engineer as to the strength of tho scaffolding Tho Clerk staled in reply to tho Chairman that ho had sent two letters to Mr Bryant's sureties, but had roceived no reply. It was resolved that the matter be placed in the hands of Mr Beard, solicitor, in tho meantirao a meeting of ratepayers be called, for next Saturday to discuss the fjqestion.
