SPORTING.

London, July 26. Tho Hon. J. White, of Sydney, has entered three horses for the Grand Prix de Paris next year. Sydney, July 27. Cinaron has been scratched for the Great Metropolitan Stakes. Masterton Road Board The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board was, held on Saturday, Present: Messrs Beetham (Chairman) Sfcuckey, Dagg, Brown and Buick. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, CORRESPONDENCE, From Wharoama Road Board covering cheque |for ,£65 10s 2d on account of debt due. From Colonial Secretary stating that special order had been gazetted, also result of poll, From Colonial Treasurer advising payment of Grown rates, From same with statement of interest due on loans. From McKenzie and Falloon re road through their properties, From Property Tax Commissioner ro payment of Native rates, From tho Chairman of the newly-constituted Rangitumau Road Board covering resolution asking if the Board would take over a portion of that district. Resolved that the Inspector visit the properties of Messes McKenzie and Falloon, and ascertain the possibility oi a more suitable lino of road, i That the consideration of the applica- , tion of the Rangitumau Road Board be held over till Saturday, August 3rd, and a special meeting convened 1 to consider it, That tho sum of £lO be voted to improve the road leading I to Mr J3. E. Chamberlain's property, ! Miki Miki. That a special rate of ' 11-24ths of a penny in the pound, on the properties of persons interested in j loa.i of £SO for branch road, Upper ; Plain bo struck,

The Engineer's report was read aa follows and adopted, Sir,—l have the honor to report for tho information of tho Board as follows :

In accordance with instructions I prepared tracings of the lines of roads which the Board require to be legalised, and handed the same to Mr Stuckey, who undertook to present them at the Chief Surveyor's Office, Wellington. I havo also given Mr Carman notice that tho Board cannot allow him to plough up tho road at To Ore Ore leading to Mr Cave's property as had been done by Mr Brodie last year.

The deferred payment settlers, Messrs Welch and others, intend waiting on the Board at to-day's meeting with referenco to the expenditure of the thirds now accrued, and which are available on the necessary application being made, and it is their intention to inform the Board as to the most beneficial expenditure of the money, I have examined tho defined line of road in company with some of the settlers interested, and they expressed an opinion that instead of felling tho bush on the lino at present the formation of portions thereof should be proceeded with, With referenco to tho roads applied for by Messrs Cameron and Welch, I have made an approximate estimate of tho cost of construction of the lines, with tho result that tho road suggested by Mr Welch to enable him to strike tho Rangituniau road near the homestead of Mr Stuekoy, would cost for formation and culverts about 1200, and an outlet to strike tho Euamahuiiga river near Mr Blatchford's could he made at a cost of about £IOO, the latter route would suit Mr Cameron if a bridle track from Mr Welch's to his property weie constructed at a cost of about £35,

Bluffßoad.-Ihavemadoa rough estimate of the proposed protective breastwork for this lino, which is required for a distance of about four chains, and find that the cost would be about £22, Some light slips having come down, a man has been employed in their removal, and otherwise repairing the road where necessary,

Wangaehu Road. - Slips of considerable extent Lave occurred on tho ntwly formed portions of this voiul, and a man has been employed in opening the culverts which require attention on Ibis and the old line. I may say that nearly nine miles of formation have now been completed; and I would recommend thai a roadman be permanently employed in keeping the road in order, his time in doing so would be fully occupied during the winter months, and improvements otherwise could engage him fully during the otber seasons, Theinetjlled roads generally within the district require at this, season of the year, repairing, more or less, and I would ask tho Board to authorise the employment of labor to be directed where necessary during the next two months in order that the various linos may be put in fair order for summer traffic.

A schedule shewing an estimate of oxpendituro for maintenance and repairs required on roads during tlie remaining eight months of the financial year sndjng 3 fat March 189Q, is attached, and in connection therewith it may bo stated that it is impossible to furnish other than an approximate calculation owing to damages which may at any moment occur, and which cannot possibly be foreseen.

lam, fce, M, McKenzie, Accounts amounting to £43 Is' lOd were passed' for payment and the meeting closed. A Royal Commission is to ho appointed 1 in Victoria to inquire into the Management of the chafjtalile Willitkma of the colony.
