Dunedin, June 24, A special meeting of tho Eduoation Board was held to4ty to consider the explanation of Mr D, White, M.A, head of the teaching staff and tho Normal School", as to the precise meaning of a sentence used by him at a meeting of tho Educational Institute, in which he said the system of appointing teachers was a gross system of favoritism from beginning to end. Mr White's letter was lengthy and gave an elaborate explanation of tho tenor of his speech, pointing out that tho classification scheme sanctioned by tho Board was a test of teachers* qualification, but in his opinion the system of submitting three names to the Committee to make choice from disregarded that test and set up different and varying test?. The Board considesed the letter in committee, and on resuming, adopted n resolution that Mr White's letter was ovasivo and unsatisfactory, and that he be requested to say definitely whether ho intended to charge the Board with favoritism.

In the Supremo Court to-day a summons was heard • calling onthe Official Assignee to return a deposit oi £250 that had been made as a portion of an offer for the purchase of assets in the estate of Proctor, Jones it Co. The negotiations fell through, and tho Assignee claimed the right to retain the deposit as an asset. Mr Justice Williams made an order in the terms of the summons, but declined to give costs against the Assignee,,
