Auckland, July 23. The American Commissioners, Mr L. L, Bromwell, President of the California!] Insurance Company, and Mr Alfred Stillmau, manager of the Pacific Insurance Union, have come to Auckland to interview the Directors of the New Zealand Insurance Company relative to the action of Mr Hugh Craig, manager of the ban Francisco branch of that Company in breaking away from the rules of the Union. The point at issue between the Union and Mr Craig is that he, having been a member of the Union and a member of the Committee which had originally framed the rules aud rates, had violated one of the rules by appsiuting local insurance agents in Stockton, Sacramento, and San Jose, paying ■fixed salaries,' which it is alleged is in violation of a rule of the Union which forbade the Company paj ing more than 25 per cent to the local agents. Mr Craig was fined 750 dols by the Manager for his alleged infraction of the Union'slaws, aud directed to chaugo his method of paying local agents. He has refused to pay the fine or alter his mode of payment, The object of tho American Commissioners is to get the head office to compel Mr Craig to fulfill his original agreement. The Commissioners have interviewed Mr G, P. Pierce, Geuoral Manager of the Company, but nothing has as yet come of their deliberations.

The petition from the publicans requesting the amendment of sections 63 and 75 of the Licensing Act, is in circulation, It points out that the licenses of four hotels in Auckland North have been taken away, and asks that the licensing Committees may be prevented from exercising arbitrary power, A meeting was held at the rooms of the Industrial Association to consider the best means of staying the exodus of population from the Colony, and to'utilise the labour of the unemployed on the goldfields. A resolution approving the proposal to utilise the labour of the working men in producing gold at the least possible cost to the country was passed. A scheme suggested by Mr Witherford was discussed, and a committee was appointed to lay the matter before the Government.

Seventeen head of Hereford cattle were sent to Sydney to-day by the Wairarapa, Tho animals, which went in charge of Mr T. Morrin, belonged to the late Mr J. Williamson, and should satisfactory prices be obtained, the whole herd, numbering SCO, will bo sent.

Ail Important Case. Oamarn, July 23. A rather important to holdors of bills of sale was tried before Mr Distriot Judge Ward to-day. Some time ago a bill of sale was given by G. T. Waters over the furniture and effects in the Queen's Hotel to the Commercial .Property and Finance Company for £lBBl, the amount being made up of £459 owing by the previous occupier of the hotel and £922, the amount of a bill of salo held by Thomas Low. Low filed his schedule, and tho National Bank became the possessor of his bill of sale. The Company then purchased tho Bank's interest in the bill of sale for £155, and thereafter took a bill of sale from Waters for £1481.. Waters a short time ago filed his schedule, aud the creditors took stops to upset the bill of sale, The goods in the hotel had been variously valued, the valuations ranging from £I4OO down to £SOO, The plea of the plaintifl is that as the amount of of the bill of sale was not a true statement of the valuo of the goods as set out in the Chattels Securities Act,, tho hill of sale was invalid, and on this ground Judge Ward decided it to be void.

THE CHEIIS CASE. Jellicoe Interviews the Governor Wellington, Wednesday. Mr Jellicoe waited on the Governor personally and laid papers in connection with the Chemis case before him.
