Eketahuna Road Board, r* A special meeting of the Board'™ was hold on Wednesday oveuiug,— Present: Messrs Anderson (Chairman), Morris, Mathieson, Neilson and Bright.— to determine what course they would pursue in the matter of the wreckage of the Maltakahi bridge.

The Chairman stated as their Engineer' was not present, and no communication had been received from him nothing definite could be done at present, The Clerk stated that the contract' tor's bondsmen had been written to, but had not yet replied. A rather desultory and lengthy discussion took place without any' motion before the meoting. Mr Bryant stated that ho was not in a position to ro -construct the bridge; be had entered into liabilities sufficient to complete the bridge, and all the money he had to come from the Board was already condemned. Mr Morris said that after carefully reading the printed conditions it appeared to him that the Board was somewhat involved, He quoted-.' clause 6, and said by that their engi-i neer had full supervision of all work, ™ scaffolding and all other material being specially mentioned, and that iflho scaffolding was not satisfactory or strong enough, Clause 6 provided that the Engineer could force the contractor to add to or tako away as circumstances required. That he did not consider tho scaffolding sufficient was plain, j*jk he had reported that the work waft satisfactory and made a progress pay*' ment only a day a so before the collapse. Tho contractor is not allowed to creet scaffolding without the permission of tho engmeei' and to the satisfaction of the engineer, therefore it appeared to him that tho Board was involved and it would not ;bo safe for thorn to take any steps without first consulting the officer in charge. If anything was done he would suggest that a meeting of ratepayers he called aud their opinion taken,

Mr Mathieson; But wo have means of making the bondsmen finish the work. • /*& Mr Morris: Ido not know thalr wo have, lam not so sanguine, Mr Bright moved that tho specifioations be handed to their solicitor with instructions to force the bondsmen to finish the work, but it was found that no such action could be taken as the printed conditions fully laid down the course they should, pursue. \ In answer to Mr Morris the Clerk ■ stated that tho bond had not been attached and was altogether separate from tho specifications,

Mr Evernden, who supplied tho timber for the bridge, waited on the Board and and stated that he held an order on tho Board for £l3O, and lie asked the Board whether they would acknowledge the order, as good timber to its value was now lying on • the bridge site, The sympathising with Mr Evornub? informed him that dioy could take no action whatever in the matter at present. Mr Mathiesou moved that the Engineer be written to, him to meet the Board on July 27tliHl Carried, ;. Mr Bryant stated that considerable 1: ' damage was being done to the timber .. and ironwork which lay in the river, and he asked the Board whether they would have it taken out, as ho was not in a position to do so. /Q _ Tin Chairman said it was IjJ! right that anything should be destroyed, arid he. thought tho Board could not go wrong in taking it out of the river, Eesolvod that tenders be celled in Mr Bryant's name for removing all the wreckage from the river and placing it on to the bridge site, and that the Chairman and Mr Nielson be appointed to open tenders. The meeting of the Board stands adjourned till tho regular meoting night, July 27th,
