Wairarapa North County Council Engineer's Report '■ Masthbton Riding.—Al aster ton to Wnimuta Road. Materials for tbo bridge sheeting contract have been dcliverod in the district, and the work which is now in tlio course of execution will probably bo completed by tbo next sitting of tlio Council. Tho stone-breaking contracts at To Ore Ore are making slow progress, which is no doubt in some measure due to the broken state of the wcathor, Contract No. 31 (formation and metal, ling). The requirements o£ the maintenance classes of this contract lmvo been fulfilled by tho contractors and tho work was token over by moß| on behalf of the Council on Tuesday t ilia 2nd of July, Although the contract maintenance term oxpired on the 20th June, the stato of the weather had not permitted of tho contractors completing their obligations until two days after that dale, by which time all that could reasonably be expected of them had been efficiently performed and the road bunded over in f»Sy good order, considering tho nature ot the work and season of tlio year, The subsidence in the heavy embankments during tho late ruins has at time 3 temporarily suspended heavy traffic from travelling over tho road. I hope to arrange with the carrriera to refrain from using tho line, except for light traffic, during bad weather, until the surface of tho bank haß sufficiently drained to support heavy carrriago, by which means it may bo kept in passable order v n til thoend of tho present winter, in Messrs Whutmun Bros, letter with reference to closing in the river boundary of the Taueru Pound reserve are now being proceeeded with and,. the fence will bo finished at an early date. '■ ■

Oastlepoikt Eidino.—Maaterton to Waiumta Road, I have been unable to prepare tho estimates asked for by the Council of the cost ofaoad works at Sugar Point and Rorokoko. The weather upon the occasion of J[ last visit to tho ground was bo {to that I was compelled to return and fulfil engagements in other parts of the district, which has fully occupied my time up to the present, The roadman on the Tenui-Whakataki section, reports serious damage to the road through trespassofcattlefrom the Gostlcpoint run, the road boundaries of which are at present, unfenced, I would suggest with a view suppressing this nuisance, that the Council appoint a ranger on the County roads in the Tentii district to impound all stock found straying on the luaiji linw

1 11.-i within 11 radius of nine uiilos of the. township., Ekotahuna to Tenui Road, The roadman on this line reports tho loss during a heavy flood in the end of Juno of the diun recently constated in tho Whureanm liver. Tho contracted outlet by Langton's drain proved insuscoptiblo to scorn's and being insufficient to cany the storm waters, they overflowed round the dum and undermined tho bunks I carrying everythingbetoro ihom. So far as I am informed tlie work has been all but totally destroyed, and cannot be restored except at ut considerablo outlay, and then only willi very doubtful prospects of success, Alfrepio.n Riding.—Ekotahuna to Tenui flfwd (Eketahium to Tirauffita tiectiou.) Tho metalling contract on tho Eketahunu end of this lino has been completed, and the men are now engaged in breaking the larger stones' and raking the surface , together as the new metal sets. A & permanent man has been re-appointed on this line, and is now engaged in renovating the metal surface and generally attending to tho drainage of iho line. Opaki to Manawatu Road.— Tho necessary readjustment of tho maintenance consequent upon the reductions in tho estimates in the Alfredton Riding has been given effect to and tho Mauriceville-Eketahuna section, is now kept on a much reduced scale. Tho removal of the l'oadmau from this localily has revived J,lis former numnco of pig and cattle /Jfirespass; the lino is suffering much injury in this respect, Contract No 25 (survey of Eketaliuna township road.) I am uuablo to report any farther progress with this work. Pressure of other important work has not permitted of my dealing with tho proposed expenditure of the Native lands rates. I will, however, take the earliost opportunity of preparing a schedule of expenditure for the consideration of the Council ana will a endeavour to have all necessary information ready by next ordinary silting.
