CnmsTonußon, July At a specially summoned Committee meeting of tho Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, the affiliated olubs, except Napier, being represented, it was resolved that the Committee strongly recommend to the general meeting of the Associa. tion, to be held on July 25, that the request of the Duuedin Amateur Athletic Club to hold the first championship meeting iu Dunedin during tho Exhibition time be acceded to ; also that the terms to berecommended should be that the Association finance tho meeting,. tho Dunedin Clubs to take 83J- per cent of the profits. Dunedix, July 4. At tho annual mooting of the Roseville Dairy Factory toe balancesheet showed a debit balance of £I2BB. The losses were made on a consignment and partly through a portion ot the manufactured artiole turning out bad. It appears that the condensed milk turned out in the early part of the season went bad, and that it cannot he kept when made too early,
The Licensed Victuallers' Association have sent a letter to Mr Fulton, M.U.R., thanking him for the fairness and liberal tone of his romarks in tho Assembly as to licensed victuallers and the Exhibition license, but at the same time intimating that tho trade does not regard the proposal to allow alcoholic liquors to be vended in the Exhibition with any disfavour or jealousy. The Association regards the proposal as a proper and legitimate one, calculated to supply a public demand, and repudiates any such selfish position as that in their opinion occupied by those who attempt to prevent the publio from eating or drinking what they choose.
The City Council held a special mooting to-night to discuss the Hospital and Charitable Aid Bill, but as the members had not had time to fully consider its bearings, consideration was adjourned, and the Colonial Secretary is to be aslted to delay tho measure until an opinion can be expressed. Tho Auckland unemployed held a meeting to-day, when 290 persons were present. It was decided to telegraph to the Premier, asking for relief works.
The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board at a meeting to-night carried by a majority of ono vote a motion urging that it is not desirable that the Hospital and Charitable Aid Bill should become law,
The Legal Limit. OAirARu, July 4, At a meeting of- the Borough Council this evening a letter was received from tbo Auditor-General's office intimating that as the Council's overdraft was fGOO3 (about £2OOO over the year's rates) the law would bo set in motion to recover the penalties uuilor the Act. It was pointed out that the Council's overdraft was only £1750, or £BOO less than it was at this time last year, but that one fund had been drawn against in order to meet the liabilities on others, and that tlie AuditorGeneral had added these to the overdraft to rnako up the total of £6003. The Council resolved to write to the member for the town on tho subject. It was pointed out that if the Auditor-General insisted on each fund being kept separate the Council would be unable to meet the payments of interest on loans, but that as it was the financial position bad improved.
Supreme CourtWellington, July 4. P. Mikelson was charged with having on tho 6th May broken into tlie premises of Jamos Miller, Palmcrston and stolen an iron safe containing several books, three tinsofgunpowder 14 cheques, and L2O in cash; and also with receiving the goods knowing them to liavo been stolon, Accused pleaded guilty to receiving the goods only, on which count he was sentenced to two years imprisonment with hardlabor.
John Andrew Thompson was convicted of having stolen 20 lambs the property of the Bank of New Zealaud from a ruu at Taratahi. Sentence deferred,
Thomas O'Connor, charged with assaulting and robbiug a Chinaman, was brought in not guilty and discharged.
