The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, JULY 4, 1889. MASTERTON POULTRY SHOW.
The annual chow of the Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association takes place tomorrow, and the list of entries received testifies to its growing prosperity. For souifi years past the show has been well worked up by an efficient managing committoo, and its exhibits do credit to a town of the size of Masterton. There are mortals termed fanciers, to whom the hue of a feather, tho shape of a limb, or the proportions of a bird are matters of keen anxiety, but to the general public the chief advantage of possessing a well organised poultry association is the encourangement it gives to breeding useful and profitable birds. Pigeons and canaries, though they have their admirers, and ore justly valued for the beauty and flight power of the former and the singing charms of the latter, are less popular than the larger birds, which supply the table with wholesome and nutritious food, The development of the local Association has induced many enterprising residents to import from Europe and America the best breeds of poultry, both for table purposes and egg production. The barndoor fowl of old Wairarapa is becoming scarce, and it is now recognised that certain choice kinds are, though they provo somewhat costly in the first instance, ultimately far more profitable than the mongrels upon which the poultry keeper formerly depended. It is now practicable to secure a breed of birds that will lay steadily through the winter as well as in the spring and summer, or to cultivate table fowls, largo of carcase, fine in flavor, and coming rapidly to maturity, The periodical poultry shows in this district teach farmers and breeders what class of birds aro most suitable for the particular purpose which they have in view, and it is their own fault if their poultry yards do not prove remunerative, Notwithstanding the progress made in recent years in our poultry stock, wo are still a long way bohind our American cousins, who are keener than we are in developing large and profitable types. The splendid bronze turkeys imported by Dr Hosking from the States, and which are to be exhibited tomorrow, illustrate. the enterprise of the Yankeos, Tims ipm gft three tiara ths
size and weight of the birds which we have been accustomed to in this Colonj, antlif bred for the market must necessarily prove more remunerative. With respect to the development of special breeds, we hear that it was the intention of Mr H. H, Beetham, tho President of the Society, to' havo presented the valuable trophy which he gives in connection with the present show for the best all-round poultry exhibited instead of for the- greatest 1 aggregate number of points gaiued by any oxhibitor, but as it was understood that the prize would bo awarded on the lattor basis, he did not carry out his purpose. The idea of giving special encouragement to any breed which'from the utility point of view is likely to be of the greatest benefit to the community is a good one, as it would tend to make that particular class of bird popular in tho community. Utility should no doubt be the primary aim of a poultry association, and what may be termed fancy breeding should scarcely receive an equal recognition. But eveu the breeding of fancy birds which are of little or no use for the' table is not unattended with -advantage Tho man who assiduously breeds an insignificant fowl like the bantam, and wfio takes delight in the plumage, the shape, and the carriage of such a tiny species, can rejoice in a hobby which will occasionally relieve his :nind of some of the cares and worries of existence, •oid afford him a constant pleasure and an innocent home occupation. The enthusiasm of the breeder of a bantam, a pigeon, or a canary, is often inexplicable to the uninformed outsido observer; but let him who wonders n it try the experiment of breeding a perfect bird, and labor at such a vocation until he carries off a first prize. He will then appreciate the fascination of the pursuit, and ever afterwards be a hearty believer in Poultry Shows,

Quite a number of cats have been entered for competition,-and, .with the guineapigs, will no doubt attract a large amount ot attention from the juvenile portion of those who attend the show, audit only requires fino weather, so that the attendance may be up to the mark, to make the whole affair a great success. »Mr A. Several Museums of antiquities have been established at Bomc, among which ii one outside of the Porto del Popolo, in which are kept all the objects ot interest found without the city limits. Among recent additions to this exhibition is one which possesses a peculiar attraction for dentists who aro disposed somotimos to fancy that their profession has made great strides. This object is tho skull of an old Roman, in which all tho teeth of tho upper jaw havo been lost or romoved and replaced with artistically madeteo'.hof solid gold, Theso teeth are set into the cavities left by the natural ones, and in somo lcspeotsat least are superior to the modern stylo of attachment to plates. The Italian bndget shows the enormous deficit of 50,000,000 francs, a.id at the samo time reports come of widespread distress among the workinc classes everywhere. In evory town of importance the municipality has had to provide for hundreds and thousands in ordtr to av.'iid riots or wholesale deaths from starvation, In Rome no less than 175,000 francs have heen. exp°nded for the relief of the suffering, while in many smaller,'places a rnuohlargor amount proportionately has been needed. Much if not all of this suffering is claimed to have been caused by the heading off of negotiations for the renewal of the commercial treaty with France,

It is a known fact that tho former vessel had on board specie equivalent to £OOO,OOO sterling; and there is every reason to believo that tho latter vessel when she foundered contained a large amount of specio, as it is stated on good authority that she had been despatched with money to Bonaparte to pay the arrears due to tho French forces."
