(From Our Own Correspondent). . A public meeting took place last night at the Forester's Hall. The Mayor (Mr F. H. 'Wood), was in tho chair. The object of the meeting % will be understood by tbe following resolution which was proposed, seconded, and carried unanimously. " That this meeting desires to bring under tho notice of the Government the serious inconvenience and financial loss inflicted upon both races by the long delay in finishing-up the business of tlie Native Land Court in the "NYairarapa, and prays that arrangements may bo at once made to reopen the Courtand seitleall matters' conueoted with it, and that MeSjt Buohanan and Carroll, M.H,B.'s W' asltod to assist in placing the matter before tbe Native Minister."
Should this meeting fail in it object a large public meoling will bo held of both races (Maori and European to discuss the petition with a view to the attainment of the matter indicated above.
Last night at the Wesleyan School Room an advertised meeting was held to iorm a tonic sol fa singing class, under the tuition of tho Rev J. Dellow. A number gavo in tboir ' names ns members, and a committee was elected, Eules were drawn up, and terms of payment of members discussed and agreed to. Tonic sol ?i fa-ing is to commence next Monday night, and in order to ensure regular attendance of learners the quarter tonic sol fa fees are to bo paid in advance! Now, that's something like business or in other words "sharp practice.".
Aifredton iKoact Board, A meeting of tho Board was held on 25th June. Present—Messrs ICebbell (chairman), Benton, Eli Smith, Cross, and J, Smith, The Board wont into Committee to discuss payment of moneys to G. Phillips. The minutes of tho previous mooting were read and confirmed, Tho Chairman then moved, seconded by Mr Benton and carried, that Mr Benton's motion be rescinded, and that Mr Phillips be paid £5 down and that £6O be paid into Mr Beard's hands to bo handed over to Mr Phillips on completion of transfer of road, and that the balance £39 ho paid in 12 months, the said/ balance to bear interest at 5 % Mr* Phillips desired to have a copy of same and the Clerk was instructed to supply it, The Chairman asked when the road was to be opened, and Mr Phillips stated ill about ten days, The Chairman asked if Mr Phillips would sign an agreement tcLthat effect, which he agreed tArnd signed.
