Louis Chemis before the Court. Wellinhton, Friday, Louis Chemis was again before the Court on the charge of having-mur-dered Thomas Hawltings, on 81st May. Edwin Henry Bradford,' Government armourer, deposed he had examined the gun produced and found trapes of soot in one barrel but not in the other. Both barrels were dirty, and lie thought the weapon had been recontly discharged, but whether a week or but a day before he could not say. He believed both barrels had not been fired off the same day, as when ho put; his finger in the. second barrel -it came out clean. Inside the barrel from which the soot came was comparatively smooth, the other barrel was rough, Hecould not express au opinion as to whether, each barrel of the doublebarrelledgim had been fired off on the same day. Tlioy presented tho same touch. Cross-examined: If tho two shots had been fired lie thought they most have been from the same barrel. It would take about a minute to reload. 1 •" Later, Several witnesses were examined . who gave only formal evidence.
