The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, JUNE 10, 1889. Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association.

The members of the Mastei'ton Agricultural and Pastoral Association held a moat successful annual meeting oil Saturday last, The balancesheet presented showed that the finances of the Association continue to flourish. The re-election of lasl year's President and Vice-Presidents followed as a matter of course Under their auspices, (he affairs o the Association have been conducted on a business footing, and the satis factory position which it now holdi is in a great measure due to the fac' that its managers have been men o business. The prominent questioi discussed at Saturday's meeting was of course, the failure -of the join Oommittee of the two Societies t bring about amalgamation, Tlia ultimately there will be but on aunual show in the Wairarapa' is certainty. Stock breeders will no exhibit at two Shows, -and if the once put down their foot, on th present arrangements, union in som form or other becomes » certainty The meeting recently hold at Cartel ton, which rejected in loto all ovet tureu for joint action, somewhat over shot the mark. It is the wish of th principal exhibitors in.the Lowe Valley that amalgamation should b brought about, and in directly : oppos sing this view, the Carterton meetini sowed an elemont of discord wbiohwi) be injurious to the prosperity pf th Southern Association. Perhaps tin less said on the personal issue: involved in. the question the better Believing, as we do, that amalgama tion will yet be obtained, we wouli deprecate any acrimonious discussioi which might delay a friendly union The position taken ,up . by tin Mastertoii Association 'on -th amalgamation question will , be ap proved in all parts of the district It is absurd to suppose that th Wairarapa can adequately aupporttw local, pastoral Shows, especially whei it is expected to, contribute lai'gel towards the one about to be held 01 the Qutt racecourse,

The children ought not to bo made to wait week after, week, and month after month, while conditions are, arranged with the Trustees and the Education Boaid, The Trustees should have advanced the money necessary to cover tbe-supply on the understands'thatitmustbo repaid if the conditions were not complied with, This course might have been adopted by the Trust with perfect safety, as, if the repayment were not 1 duly made, it could be deducted from ' tho next annual grant to the I mittee, The present condition of the' I pumps and wells at the Public School , is a perfect scandal, and wo are almost • surprised that our Inspector ol ' Nuiaatisea has not again made the 1 School premises the subject of an official report, • ■

A Grey town horse now holds tho championship reoord for Jong distance bolting. On Sunday while two fishermen wero, like thoir illustrious ancestors of ancient writ, holding a religious discussion outside thoir business establishment (they hive ''setup" in MrFreethy's old insuranoe offico, noar tho Groytown Station) the horse of one of the debaters, interested, no doubt, by the earnest expressions and attitudes of its owner (whom we undetstood to bo a Mr Honry Cole) took of its blinkers for bettersight and better hearing. It then, exhilirated by a sense of freedom, set off at a gay canter along the Main-street towards Carterton, dragging after it a spring trap, for company's sake. The bold fisherman threw down their nets—and for that matter.everything as well—and prepared to follow. But a better than they appeared on the scene, and a young man catching a glimpse of this strange go-as-you-please turn-out as it passod.l Jones',Hotel-in wild career,'"hastily saddled his horse, and commenced a long stern chase, Not till two bridges had been safelynegntiated and Oartettoh nearly reached, hid he' overtake. the festive quadruped, But when he did do so its fate was sealed and a rope,, skillfully thrown, lassoed the -flying animal, and thus untimely cut short its move for liberty,. The horse—which has ken a " trooper"-was disappointed but unhurt; and tho trap beyond a slipht depression—it had lost a little of its usual buoyant spring—ivaa aB good as over; and both arc ready to do tho same again whenever they pet the chance. As for the fishermen they have decided to, in future; leave mortising to their sweethearts and wives, whom"tlioy think will do the subject justice, and pay more attention to capricious horofiesh.'
