AMERICAN. • New York, June 3. ; The residents in Johnstown paid ho attention to the warning of the coming danger, or they might have taken refuse on the high lands adjacMt-. While laughing at the idea of danuer, they were, in an instant overwhelmed. It is conjeeturad by some that 25,000 persons were drowned by the floocla, Johnstown. Hundreds of houses toppled from their foundations, and floating on the crest of the waves the flood dashed them together until they were destroyed, the inmates in vain shrieking for help. Fears have been felt as to the safety of the reservoir for more than a year. The damage is estimated at •"25,000,000. dollars. The town of South wark, Mineral Point, Connemaugh, Woodvale, Cumbriarity, Morrelvillo, and Sheridan ■were so completely destroyed; that scarcely a building is left standing, and most ot the residents have been drowued. For, twelve miles round Johnstown every town,.village, railway, telegraph - line, mill, and house has simply been swept out of existence, ~ Two thousand coffins have been Sent to Johnstown. The floods in Connemaugh Valley are now receding, and the weather is cloaring, In other parts of the country serious' floods have occurred. Every-river draining from the Alleghanies is a raging torrent, and many oollieries have been swamped, The railway bridge over the Potomao at Harper's Ferry was only saved by loading it with locomotives., -Washington and Richmond both overflowed, and the bridges at Appomotton and Petersburg were all cashed away. Belief is being energetically organised for the Strieker, districts, Two trains on a Pennsylvania railroad were swept away and every one on board were drowned. Johnstown was piled up high with debris, to which people flocked for refuge from the raging waters. By some-meins it caught fire, and every minute floating houses, crowded with people, were dashed by the torront' iu the flames, to add victims to the holocaust. The railway officials compute that 1500 poor wretches were roasted to death.

The Novo Vreinya insists that the speech mado by the Czar at the betrothal ceremony is of a perfectly peaceful charaoter. The Panslavist party are jubilant, believing that the Czar's speech portends the re-opening of the Eastorn question, a course which it commends. '
