Oamabu, May 20. , A sad fatal accident ocourred at Allday Bay* about nine miles from Oamaru, this evening, Mr Hamilton, a storekeeper at Kakanui, was driving with his s'on aged eight, across a creek, when they met a wagon. The trap they were in was thrown back into the water over an embankment, and the boy, who was clinging to it was drowned. The trap fell on top of him. Henry Dean, a young man working l at a Bawmill at Kumara, injured'by a falling tree, died to-night, He : never recovered consciousness.
John Nolan, a miner at Blueßpur, was killed in his sluicing claim this morning by a fall of earth. He was only partially buried, but the falling stones struck him, He never spoke afterwards, and died as soon as he was extricated from the dirt,
Ashbdbton, May 20. The premises and plant of the Ashburton Woollen Manufacturing Company, in liquidation, have y been sold to the Mosgiel Company. The lattfer have agreed to carry on the factory for at least three years. There ] is every prospect of the creditors of 1 the Ashburton Company having their claims paid in full. Auokland, May 20. At the Chamber of Commerce rooms to-day a number of friends of Mr T. H. Ivey, who leaves to assume the management of the head office of the Bank of New South Wales in Sydney, presented him with an address and a purse of sovereigns. An interim dividend of 10 per cent per annum has been declared by the National Insurance Company. A meeting of the shareholders of the Auokland Gas Company was held yesterday, when the proposed Bill for extending the Company's powers was explained by the chairman, Mr B. In- connection -with the statement of the Department that there ate no grounds for complaints against the Takapuna Barracks as quarters for the A.O. Force, the Herald says:— "Men are employed removing the filth which lias accumulated in the trench around the barracks, and larger drain pipes are being laid down to cany off the water from the trench. The barracks are getting two or layers of asphalteover in to prevent leakage, which occurs every time it rains. The wash-house whioh is adjoining the barrrclts dormitory had to be closed up to prevent the stench arising from defective sewage pervading the whole of tho barracks, and men have now to go a distance of fifty yards to waßh in th e open air, or in the wash-house adjacent.
Auckland, Monday. _ The Hon E, Michelson left Man'ukau by tho s.s. Gairlooh yesterday, Mr Ivey, the retiring manager of the Bank of New South Wales, was entertained at a dinner by the members ofthe Northern Club on Saturday evening, and will be the recipient of ft presentation from' the citizens to-day.
Chbisiohuroh, May 20. Mr Eden George, candidate for Ohristchurch North, addressed a crowded meeting at tli9 Theatre to-night. He declared himself a Protectionist, in favor of local option, a modified Hare system of election, and reduction ofnumborof members. A vote of confidence was passed, hut many present did not vote. - Samuel Charles. Jolly, another candidate, addressed a smeller but disorderly meeting at the Oddfellows' Hall. The meeting was evidently disposed to look'on his candidature as a joke, and interrupted him continually. He announced himself as a workingman's candidate. A vote of thanks only was passed. James Barlow was committed for trial at the Police Court on Saturday afternoon for the larceny as a bailee of two horses, the preperty. of Mr Nicbol, at Palmerston North, in 1887. Bluff, May 18. On the voyage of the brigantine Oirce from Newcastle, a seaman named Christian Kessler fell from aloft and was killed.
