Detectivo-Strgeant Ward, who has 1 charge of the case in which Arthur Bold Hornbuckle, wh owas accountant iu the Prahan branch of the , Bank oi Victoria, is oharged ■' with stealing" £2500, has succeeded in tracing the movements of the acoused • up to Thursday last. The laßt that was known of Hornbuckle when the frauds wero discovered was that he was seen at the Oaulfield races on Saturday, the 20th April last. He gavo a well-known bookmaker three ' £SO notes to execute a commissioto'' for him in backin? horses,. day, and next day (Easter Monday) they attended the Banwick races, Hornbuckle gave the bookmaker certain money to baok homes for him, and after the first t'iyo. races ho handed Hornbuckle £B6O, which sum Jiad been won in wagers on the Arses. Shortly afterwards HornTrackle informed the boakinakor that ho had dropped £ISOO by backing Carbine, which horso, it will bo remembered, was just beaten on the post by Abercorn. They again slept at tho Exchange Hotel at night, but the bookmaker left the Hotel before .j ■ Hornbuckle had risen. He, however, saw the latter in a draper's shop . during tbo day, and Hornbuckle then said that he had received a telegram which required his immediate presence in Molbourno, and they then said good bye, and Hornbuckle has not been seen since .by tho bookmaker. A gentleman] however, to > whom Hornbuoklo is known, saw tho T latter in the street in Sydney on .sK* Thursday last. This information was communicated to Major Kennedy, head of the Victorian detectives, and that oflicor at onco communicated with the authorities at the Bank of Victoria, with the result that on Monday afternoon Mr Ryan, one of the Bank officials, and Deteotivo Sergeant Oawsey loft by JApress train for Sydney. Horni3 well known to Mr Eyan, ■ and it is anticipated that he will be arrested within a very short time.
