CHARITABLE AID.

A conference of delegates from' the various local bodies in the Wairarapa was held this (Saturday) afternoon at the County Council Chambers, Masterton, Preseut : Messrs H. R, Bunny, (Chairman), Braitbwaite, B, Meredith, A. W. Eenall, E, D. Dagg, and fi. Brown.

The Clerk intimated that.the object of the meeting was to see if delegates intend to file a statement of defence in the action brought against the North Wairnrapa County Council hy the Wellington Benevolent Institutions for contributions. The defenco must be filed on or before next Wednesday. The Chairman said his opinion had not altered one iota, anil thought the delegates should still resist this claim. As the delegates had gone bo far, he' contended they should fight the matter out. The best thing they could do would be to Eulimic the whole matter to a lawyer and postpone action as long as possible. He would move that legal advice be taken as to whether any defence could be mado.

Mi' E. Meredith seconded the proposition. pro fornm: He was entirely of the same opinion.as the Chairman, and hoped the demand would be resisted to the uttermost.
