' Michael Dqwlufg. :_ •/ Blenheim, May 4 11. I An inquest was held to-day on Mioheal Dowling, who died -at the Hospital yesterday while under ohloroform. The poßt mortem examination showed that the deceased's heart was rather. enlarged and vefy pale. No blame was attached to the medical -manwho administered, the ohloroform. The verdict of the jury was that the deceased died from the effeots of chloroform.
Railway Accident. ; Waipawa, Monday. An accident occurred near here on the railway line on Saturday, when the engine and tender of the train from Napier to Woodville were derailed through two horses going on the line.' The engine went over a small embankment, and the driver and stoker were both much skaken and bruised. The wonder is that both were not killed. The train from Woodville to Napier was connected with the train from Napier to Waipukurau with the transfer of mails and ; passengers. The delay exceeded four hours. . 1
Heavy Rain. Napier, May 12. The heavy rain which commenced on Thursday continued until this morning. It is several years since Hawkes Bay had such a glorious downpour of rain. It was' accompanied by a gale, which raised a heavy sea, and the Tarawa and Manapouri, which arrived in the bay yesterday, could , not be ..tendered. Both steamei's were detained until this morning, but it was still 60 rough as to prevent communication, and they Bailed for Auckland and Wellington respectively. j Exhibition Regatta-
Ddnedin, May 12, At a well-attended- meeting last night it was decided to hold aa Exhibition regatta about the 14th of February, and committees were appointed to carry out the arrangement. It was decided to offer a prize of LIOO for a pulling race tvith a view of inducing intercolonial competition, but the class of boats was left over; also to offer prizes of not less than LSO and Lis for first and second class yachts respectively, the method of classification being also left over,
The Hanging of the Pook Murderer.
Napier, Monday, Haem Te Pere, executed for tlie murder of the Pook family, met his fate without an emotion. At his trial at Gisborne Pere confessed to the murder, but last Friday night he made a statement to Captain Preece, 8.M., to the effect that he and his brother entered Poolt's store for robbery, but bang detected, his brother struok Pook, and in fact committed all the murders while he (Haera) looked on in bewildered astonishment. He stated 'to the others that it was arranged amongst his family that, he, being guiltless, should be arrested, and would be got off, his brother paying for a lawyer with tbeproceeds of the robbery. The hangman who carried oat the proceedings "was a 'prisoner serving a short sentence, for which service the rest of his ! sentence was remitted.
