Masterton School Committee Annual Report
Your Committee submit their annual report with satisfaction, The workand management of both schools for the past year have been fully maintained: the number of children on the rolls shows a steady increase. At present the numbers are 001 and 109 respectively, making:a ; "grand total of 710,- and the average,for the yeavbas been During tbe past year there has been considerable changes in the teaohing staff; the head master, Mr W. T. Grundy was transferred in December last to Clyde Quay School, Wellington, thus earning a welldeserved promotion after 8J years successful management of .'the Masterton Sohool. Mr W. H. Jackson, who was appointed to the vacancy, appears to give entire ■ sati?faotion, and shows ho is well qualified for the position, The other teachers comprising the staff are efficient as usual. Miss Keeling, of the Infant Sohool, still maintains her reputation, as a capable and zealouß teaoher.
The annual balance sheet attached is forthe year ended 81st December, 1888, and shows receipts' £192 16s 4d, expenditure £IBB 2s Bd. The Town Lands; Trustees, have again assisted your Committee witha-g'ant in aid of £SO, thus enabling many 'improvements to be made, whioh the grant from. the Eduoation Board would not cover, The capitation allowanoe is barely sufficient to pay ordinary expenses.
During the past year, ninoteen meetings have been held, at whioh the attendances were—Edwin Feist; 18; E.McEwen,l7; W.Prangnell, 16; A.W.Hogg, 15; R.M.Ualloway,ls; A.W.Eenall,l4;:O.E. Daniell, 11.

Mr Hogg moved that the Secretary : make application to the Education Board for a grant, in aid of procuring a supply of water to the school, to be accompanied with an estimate ot the cost, an explanation of the scheme, and to point out that'it would obviate any further expense in the future,, if the present work were undertaken. The motion was seconded by Mr Prangnoll and carried. ; A telegram was read from the Secretary to the Board stating that 1 they had no temporary assistant to fill the vacancy'in the staff pending ,' the election of a teacher. Mr H ogg moved and M r MoEven 1 seconded Ibat application be again made, to the Education Board for £6, halt the balance of the cost of the '. new closets.—Carried. . ~ Tenders for firewood werereceived, 'that of It. J. Chapman'at 16s 6d • being accepted.-:-„•: .• -:..'■;". ■ . : . The headmaster, reported for the month ending 81st March, 688 onthe roll,,average attendance' 478, per 1 centage 81, Mr Erskine was removed 1 at. the end of the month, since'which ' date-bis post had been vacant." "On - 20th inst. Mr R. Leo paid an inspec- > tion visit (report enclosed). The atten- • tion of the Committee was drawn to the fact that two sheep and a pig t constantly made depredations .and i nuisance in the front part of the ' school grounds. Two sacks of lime had been received for use in the outhouses, and the nuisance formerly complained of was greatly reduced. Misß Keeling reported on the 3 Infant School: Average attendance , 92, highest'lo2, lowest 47. - . Mr Lee reported," Staff sufficient. , Sohool in good working order; J Headmaster active and taking a good [ part of the teaohing, I have reconir mended the introduction of modelling . in clay in the infant classes. I was particularly pleased with tho classteaching in the higher standards add with theinstruction in singing. The School, promises to maintain its j efficiency." - . The' Secretary was authorised to 9 procure six dozen hat pegs, and also .; to notify Mr J. 0. Ingram ro'pigs ! and sheep getting into the front t groandn. ' ; B Mr Hogg proposed, and Mr Mo--8 Eweii seconded, That an application . be made to'the Town .Lands' Trust j for a grant in aid of £75, and that Q the Chairman and the Secretary 1 draw up a report of what the' money is required for,-Carried. Accounts amounting to £6 6s were passed for payment. Under general business, Mr Hogg inovod, and Mr MoEwen seconded • that the Town Lands Trustees organise a picnio in aocordar.ee with the act, for the purpose of giving-the children a treat, and tint the ComJ mitteo suggest the.
