Auckland Items. Auckland, April 17. The Board of Education have deferred for six months consideration the question of appointing another inspector, or taking other steps to overtake the work of inspootion. George Murray, an old settler, [who formerly lived in Otago, died snddeuly at big residence, Mangspai, yesterday. A sura of monoy has been forwarded from Home by the Society of Friends for the erection of a place of worship for Friends in Auckland, and an allotment has been seonred in Waketield-street, where a hall will be erected.
A somewhat serious difference has arison between the Board of Education and the Ponsonby School Committee with reference to the action oi the former body in. dispensing with the services of Mrs Rooney, the head teacher of the Richmond Road School. It appears that Mrs Rooney had applied for a month's leave oi absence for family reasons, and lfed obtained leave on a previous occasion. Tho Board have made a rule that teachers under suoh circumstances must give up their positions, although, as in Mrs Rooney's case, they ma j be efficient teachers. The Committee contend that the law- was not complied with, and that they were nol properly consulted.. Tho Board Contend that they have made it a rule tc discharge teachers in such oiroum stances.
I Damages against the Bailway Department. Hokitika, April 17. The compensation case, Vincent v, the Railway Department, was con* eluded to-day, the jury awardiug LSO special and LBSO general damages, They were two hours con. sidering the verdict, An appeal will be made. The foreman brought under the notice of the Judge that many of the jurors being miners and living some distance from home and being away five days, were obliged to put on wages men, They had to pay their coach fare and hotel exponses, yet were only allowed 10a altogether. Mr Justice Denniston regretted their hardship, and said the amount was fixed by statute, Ho would bring the. mattor under the notice of the Government.

' The Masons belonging to the Eng. lish, Irish, and Scotch Constitutions will receive Lord Onslow.at Government House on Monday morning, and line the carriage drivo along which the Governor will pass, The three Grand Masters will welcome him at tlie'entrance to the house, and present him with an address. It is understood thgt a guard of honor of 100 Volunteers .will be sent., from the encampment at Hamilton on Sunday night to assist in the Governor's reception, but that no other men will be allowed to leave the camp,
'Overcrowding. . ■?i - j Auckland, Wednesday. ■ . Hugo, of the Minstrel troupe was fined £1 and costs for overcrowding at the Opera House on the opening' night. It , was shown the passages and other standing room was crammed.
