Shooting with Intent;
Oamahd, March 24.
Duncan Gilohrist was to-day committed for trial for shooting at John McDonald with intent, from the evidence it appears that McDonald went to the house of accused's father and demanded the return of some photographs which he said accused had taken out of his pocket on the previous night. Some words followed, and McDonald said Gilchrist, sen., struck him, and in tiuli he struck Gilchrist and; linockeJ him down. The son (accused) oame out of the house and told his mother to bring the gun. The mother brought the gun, and McDonald walked away, and when about 88 yards from accused the latter fired at him and missed. He fired again, and one of the shots passed througli MoDonald'B coat and shirt jind grazed his skin. Accused's father said the gun. was fired into the hedge to frighten Mcdonald. .
The Broughton Dispute-
Napier, March 24.
Affairs at Ornahu remain in statu quo. No settlement has been ar-. rived at, and the. two forces remain encamped. Broughton has been strongly reinforced, and his people are now quite equal in number to Airini's.
Bad Shooting. Blenheim, Monday.
Captain Sommerville estimates that when the accounts of this year's meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association are made up, there will be a deficiency of about £7O, including the credit balance of £IOO carried forward from last year, The loss is due to the smaller number of ontries which proportionately reduced revenue from ammunition and sighting shots.
The Eawson Commission.
New Plymouth, Monday.
The Eawson Commission was resumed this morning. Jones' first charge against Judge Eawson consists of corruption, perjury, partiality, malice, conspiracy, denying the existence of a most high being and general conduct, and his want of sobriety unfit, him to command the respect due to a gentleman holding the position of Judge, and Magistrate. The second charge is that while sitting on the Bench he wickedly prevented the true course of justice, and conspired with others to prevent Jones having a fair and impartial trial, during the hearing of conspiracy cases on April 19th and 20th, 1886. Judge Eawsou's conduct on the Bench was highly slanderous, abusive and insulting, and he had tho appearance of being under the influence of liquor, and generally during the whole cases Judge Eawson acted in a wicked, corrupt, and malicious manner, with intent to defeat the ends of justice etc. The fourth and fifth charges are some' what similar iu language. The whole morning was-taken up discussing the charges with the Commission, and Jones is now opening up his own case.
The Piako Swamp. Auckland, Monday. The native meetiug at Orakei postponed the opening till Wednesday. The Hon. Mr Mitohelson goes to the Thatnes to-morrow to arrange with tho Piako natives ro block of land there in which the Government stand £IB,OOO. Ho will not be back for tho opening of Orakei meeting but will attend it on Thursday.
Another Fire'
Auckland, March 21,
A fire occurred yesterday at Lamhome's ironmonger shop in Karanga-bape-road, Newton, the building being partially gutted. The greatest damage to the stock was done by water. The insurances on the stock amount to £9200, the offices conbeing the London and Liverpool and Globe Company, "Royal, Norwich Union, and South British. The amount of policies in respect of the building is not yet known. The value of the stock is estimated at L 5600.
Valuations.
Auckland, Maroh 24,
The oity valuations have now been completed, Last year the rateable property in the city was valued at £888,864. This year reductions have been mado to the extent of £25,542, leaving the .valuation for 1889 at £818,022.
