The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY MARCH 23, 1889. The Government Land Sales.
The Government land sales were concluded on Thursday last, Tho sales, according to the report of the Post, have -been very successful, 12,742 acres 0 roods, 39 perches having been disposed of to 80 persons. Tho capital value of the land sold was £15,512 0s 7d, while tho deposits amounted to £IOSO 7s 3d. The value of the land purchased under tho various conditions was as Mows: —Perpetual lease, £12,590 0s; cash, £1834 8s; deforced payment, £IOB7 0s 7d; total, £45,512 Os 7d. Levin township was offered on Thursday by the Chief Commissioner (Mr J.W. A, Marchant), but only ten sections, realising £lO7, were sold. A number of persons who were under the impression that the land could be selected at any time made application after the sections had been put up, and'found to their surprise that they would have to wait until the land was offered by auction again. While it is extremely gratifying to find that there is such an active enquiry for land, it is somewhat strange that the Waste Lands Boards do not make more of their opportunities, Only ten sections, it is said, were sold in I evin township, but do the general public know anything about this newcentre: where it is situated, and what its future prospects are, Some years ago the Wasto Lands Board made the mistake of over-advertising certain land, and actually spent, more money in publicity than came back to them by the sale.of the land. Since then they have gone to the other extreme, and now they may scarcely be said to advertise at all. They will put a ten or twenty thousand pound block into the market without the beat of a drum or any note of warning, Tho consequence is a number of middle men make it their business to watoh these, silent sales with a view to securing sections which-can hero-sold at an advance. In the bush district there is said to be an enormous number of sections untouched and unimproved, whioh arc for sale privately. 'I hough there has been of late a considerable traffio in land in our bush district, the actual occupation is extremely small as compared with the area placed m the market. It wants a Kennedy Macdonald to people these lands I
