Smith and Sons, tho well-known nows-vendors. The alleged libel is contained in a publication recently I offered forsale by Smith & Sons. Lord Randolph Churchill, in a letter to Tho Times on the proposed naval oxpeudttuio, attacks the proposals of the _ 'First Lord of the Admiralty, on tho ground that the Admiralty cannot be with tho expenditure of such ti large suifi as proposed.
It is expected that English Gnanciers will inteipose to arrest 'the fall ot copper below the basis of £SO per ton by arranging for a reduotion of the output. The copper syndicate is modifying existing contracts with a view of effecting sales gradually. Air Stevenson, the novelist, in a letter to Tho Times, defends Mr J. . ■, Albany, llth March, Late papers by the mail steamer Rive details of the murder of Inspector. Martin whilst attempting the arrest ol Father. M'Fndden at Gweedore On the 3rd February last. It appears tliot after celebrating mass that day, the police appeared at the doors of the Ghurch with Hie intention of arresting the priest. The latter, however, succeeded in reaching'his house, the police being in close pursuit. For tlm greater part of tho distance, from the church to the house the police had to face the rushes ot about 100 peasants. The Inspector'was stuntied by a blow, and while he was lying on the groand he was beaten oy. tho peasants, who ran away at the-priest's command. Every bone in Martin's body except the right temporal bone was fractured. The skull was smashed, and. the boue driven into the brain. The body presented a most shocking spectacle.
