GREYTOWN.
• (From Our' Own Correspondent.) . One of the oldest' New Zealand settler?, Mr T. Keinpton, senior, was taken seriously ill a few, days since, and on account of, his great age (88 years), it was feared-it would end. fatally, lie has, however, rallied and is reported to bo from the attack. • There have been'harvest thanksgiving services at the several places of worship, ending with the-usual collection. • ■ , The Scottish Minstrels ■had; a fair " House" at the Palace Hall last night. •' "'
An amusing incident in connection with what might be aptly called teetotal retrenchment, occurred here the other day .A settler, noted in "the good old days" for his drinking proclivities, was thus accosted by an old' chum, " Hallo Jem, why I haven't seen you 'tight' for an awful long lime." "No!" "No, have you turned teetotaller?" "Not exactly mate, but its this way, fact is I can't afford to get drunk these times." " I cau't make you out, Jem, what do you mean by can't afford to get drunk?" "Well, you see times ain't what thoy used to be, wages is lower, work' sometimes slack, and if a fellow wants a " booze" he must, do a" loaf" and boozo on the cheap, and you know that stylo don't suit me, nor never did, so now-a-days I can just about, mauaga a pint of" rot gut '-' (colonial b'eer) for myself on a Saturday night, and take a, pint in a bottle home and a drop of. something short for the old woman and myself on Sunday." " Good on yen Jem, what do you say if we have a drink before 'we part?" " All right," and the twain then " liquored up." c There was a heavy gale from the west all day yesterday. •
