. Dunedin , Tuesday. The Colonial Bank's nett profits for the half year is £16,102. A 1 per cent dividend is recommended absorbing £14,000, and ' £4,411 carried forward.

Three Skeletons.

In excavating beneath a store in Victoria-street, Hamilton, to-day, the workmen discovered the skeletons of three Natives in a good state ol preservation.

The party, of men who liavo been engaged for - several months : past killing wild sheep at the. Tophouse have been disbanded, in consequence of liaving. apparpntly exterminated the animals. Some ,time t ago, the sheep which were known " to be infected with scab strayed into the back country, and were supposed to have spread the infection toother wild sheep at the time. These came down and mixed with the settlers' flocks in the vicinity,' and for that reason the Government decided to. exterminate all the wild sheep in tha : district;' The' party killed 1808 sheep, ' .

Grass Fires. ■ Gmiistohuoh, .March 11. Tliero has been extensive grass fires 011 the port hills during the past few days. On Saturday afternoon Howell and Taploy's slaughterhouse, uear Lyttleton, had a narsow escape. In the evening the Maori pa at Raupaki was only saved after several hours' hardrwork by the Natives and settlers.- A large quantity of grass and some bush were destroyed, In the night a north-west breeze drove the toward Lyttleton. Mr Gallagher's house at Cass Bay was saved with difficulty. This afternoon the fire appeared over the hills above Dampier Bay, , close to Lyttleton. The police and firemenj with a number of Volunteers, turned out,, and after a course ot hard work checked the progress of the fire toward town, A considerable number of sheep arc supposed to have perished,
