In the House of Commons, Sir James Fergasson, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, replying to Mr Howard Vincent, M.P. for Sheffield, said that the British Government had been requested by the Samoan chiefs to annex Samoa. The Government, however, was compelled to refuse the request, but had been able to effect satisfactory arrangements which would secure theautonomy of the group. Washington, 4th March.
A sensational scene occurred in the Senate this evening, Senator Reddleborg vigorously attacked the Speaker, and after repeating the offensive expressions which he had been ordered to withdraw, tho Speaker instructed the officers of the Chamber to arrest him, Mr Reddloberg offered a violent resistance, and was removed with great difficulty. The Senator was drunk.
