At a meeting of the Trades and Labour Council it was stated that the contractor for the new Auckland Customhouse was subletting the work, or what ia practically tho same thing, getting it dona by piecework. The estimate was based on carpenters getting 10s per day, but much lower prices are paid. It is statod in most Government contracts that there is a clause against sub-letting. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Minister of Public Works calling attention to the subject, and to inform the Minister that it is reported on good authority that it is intended to sublet the work on the Kaukapakapa railway extension.
