: Frozen Meat Report. Nelson . f' ■,■} Bros., of London, report on December"*'. ; 28 ;-New, Zealand Blieep—During > the past month, the sales of New •- • Zealand'mutton havebeeiiivery limi- ..'■'■■■ ted, in consequence of tho increased ; demand for prime beef and poultry as Christmas approached. During ', the first fortnight succeeding'tho■•= .: date of our last report, tho supply of. ':■. all classes of meat was only moderate " . and values consequently firm, and. i although the value of New Zealand ; mutton did not move upwards, .still ' values:were firmer.. .This/position '-.. was maintained until last week when, vsupplies of meat from allsourcjfcj'' were increased, in tho an improved market at Christmas,;' judged, probably,' by 4lie experience,' of the past two years, wheu values improved at this season. Tho ' Christmas markets, have, however, been very disappointing, sales of live stock being made at very. unprofit. able figures, aud.buyers, then- losing, . money on the dead meat. Large quantities of live stock, specially .. ' resoived for this soason, have been : f ; returned to their owners unsold. The losses aliround must amountto ■ ) a considerable sum. The supplies of American beef (muoh of it of splen- v did quality) have been exceptionally ; heavy during tho past fortnight. ■• As a clearance had to be made, values w rapidly fell away 2d to 8d per pound 1/ before the'close of last week, a fall'.. . which has not yet been recovered, ' Added to tho unfortunate excess of supplies,. the weather suddenjki', changed from joold and dry to fog&w>' close and damp, necessarily decrease ing the demand for meat, dealers being afraid of over-stocking their shop. Considering these events, it is not surprising that it' has been difficult recently to inovo more than .; a few hundred carcases of New ' Zealand mutton, daily, even though " the advantages of lower prices was ■ offered; With cold weather,, the demand should now rapidly increase, and if stocks are oarefully handled, it is to be hoped that no further decrease ,ih valuo will take place. ' Stocks are exceptionally heavy, and" ".-.. arrivals shortly due will probably. " have to wait time for realisation, ■■'■
