School Singing.
, A contributor to some corieapon--dence in the Sydney Morning Herald on singingin schools says: -'! What is wanted in our state schools is, in the first place, that children's songs" should always be written, within a small compass, neither high nor low, ■ but within that ''happy medium" which is not far removed from the normal pitch of collective or general speech in children. Secondly, loud singing should be rigorously sup-., pressed. This is even more impor-/. , tent than the former. Loud rarely" blends,"even'wheu attempted,™ I ', by finished artists, for if half-a-dozen vj trained singers sing in unison (say, middle' D,' which is common to ail. voices), loudly, six individual voices. twill be distinctly heard, but a thou-' sand persons singing the same note softly and gently, will," as a rule, produce but one tone. Therefore, without altering the Government 'scheme' in any way, if the responsible officer will but do his duty as a musician, who has charge of the vocalists of the '■;. future, and if he will discountenance.. all school songs but such as he' within the middle register of the children's voices, until they are , brought within the scope of higher vocal training; and. if he will condemn all loud or exerted vocalisation,. ;' and insist upon the larynx beingused' ; naturally and simply for the produo- ; . - tion of only soft and sweet musical tones, I venture to say that,.even by ■■. such' simple means,"not only will the - ears of the present generation be ; , : spared much pain, but'the yooa};.;oi'; organs ot thbnext generation will much benefitted," >-: ■■■"'':•; ■''.• : .-'-; : i: :: :;;r?!f'..
