MDISAHOES. ■ Mr James Macam wrote complaining of the nuisance caused, by the stream which ran through his property'-jj being- obstructed, and stating that '' the trees were being killed with excess of water. Tlie. attention of th& Inspector of Nuisances had. been : called to it without avail. ; ; The Mayor pointed out that the stream was not the property of the , Council, and any injury caused to Mr Macara by his neighbors below was a private matter for him to deal with < elsewhere. ,\ They might treat him. with the greatest courtesy they could and': hand .tho letter over' to : the (Sanitary Committee.
After some further discussion the matter was referred to the Sanitary Committee. Messrs McEwen and others wrote calling attention to the state of the footpath from the bridge to Eoss-sfc. The-path was very much depressed, and was flooded in wet weather.
Or Gapper moved and Or' Perry 7 seconded that the Overseer be authorised to use some of the stuff, that he was removing from the' paths where tho asphalt was boing put down. to fill the depression. • Cr Heron said there was no cause" of complaint before Mr fietiall sent the water down. It was simply an attempt on his part to get the work. done by the Council. The Mayor said he did not wish them to interfere with his work. The request was simply that the footpath might be brought up to its normal condition. The motion was carried. ASPHALTING. The road overseer recommended the Council to get some thirty yards more asphalt mixed, as it would be required for the footpath in Queeu street- extending- from Bannisterstreet to the Prince of Wales Hotel. THE WATER CART, The Mayor'reported that he had seen Mr Williams, and he had given permission willingly to the Council to take the water cart on his property for the purpose of filling it, He > thought it very land of Mr Williams to grant the permission, although they might not require to make use of it this season.' THE WATER SCHEME. The Mayor applied to. the Council i* to let birn have, as much gravel as could be spared from where it was beiiigremoved, preparatory to iug the footpaths, for the purpose of * raising the footpath at the Post Office corner. There were other places ' where there were depressions, which required raising, The paths were worn away in places quite six inches, aniin the event of the water being sent down in the day time for fire ' purposes, they would bo flooded unless this was done.
Cr Perry asked if there was not any . other place where this gravel was required, Cr Heron said there was, but if Mr Kenall had taken it away without asking leave, as he had before, no doubt the Council would not have; interfered, The Mayor said it was not a question of bringing down the water, It was the duty of the Council to. make tip the footpaths under any' circumstances. He was not.asking anything for himself, and considered the Council had put. quite burden enough on the Committee, ■ Or Heron said the. Council had ). raised no objection to Mr Renall H taking the surplus gravel, but he * must not ask the .Council to interfere with his undertaking by carting the. gravel, for him., : The Mayor presumed that a formal resolution was not required and that the Council would agree to his pro- -: posal, but as Cr Heron preferred it, a motion should be put. He moved that he (the Mayor) be allowed to avail himself of the surplus gravel to fill up the depressions in the footpaths as for as it would go. There being no seconder to the resolution the motion fell through, it - being understood .that no objection would be raised to Mr Benalls taking the extra gravel provided he found his own cart'for its removal. .
