Utterly Destitute. Donnedin, January 16. An old woman named Ann Harley, who lias led an abandoned life", was found in a state: of great; destitution in an hotel in Staffoi'd-streot, being very ill aud alone and unattended, lying 011 an old sofa with scarcely any covering. Her limbs were also much swollen, and she was evidently in a critical condition. She was removed to the hospital, and hopes are entertained of her recovery, Her husband is undergoing a sontence for forgery.
Suspected Infanticide. Dunedin, January 16. The body of a female infant was found in the Lowor Barbour on Tuesday. It was seen floating by a child. The body was rather decomposed, but bore no marks of violence. So far as can be judged, the , infant had been borne about six days, and had evidently been alive.
The Lincoln Seat. CuitiSTOiiuncu, Thursday. At llie election for tho Lincoln sent yesterday 'Mr' A. Saunders was returned by a majority of 356 votes, the numbers being Saunders C 76, Ollivier 320. Suppressing Quacks. , Doxedin, January 16. The Medical Society drafted a Bill recently with tho view principally of dealing with medical quacks and suppressing thoui. The Bill was sent to the Government for approval. This has. been given, but to the astonishment of tho Society clauses have been introduced providing for eaoli registered medical practioner paying an annual fee of two guineas to the revenue.^ larceny. Welunoton, Thursday, Hugh MoKean, convicted of the larceny of some valuable-flutes which he pawned; has been admitted to probation for six months.
■ , Mining. Hokitika, January 6, The Batik of New Zealand shipped 3008oz of gold valued at £15,632. Mining enterprise is increasing, tlio rains yesterday and to day giving the sluicers plenty of water. Bankruptcy Laws Amendments, Wellington, Thursday. A deputation from the Chamber' of Commerce waited on the Minister of Justice today urging several amendments in the Bankruptcy Act, and laid special stress on the point that the term "proper books and accounts' 1 , should bo defined . as ''cashbook, daybook, and ledger." The Hon Mr Fergus promised to consider the matter, and mentioned he waa haying some useful returns prepared ou the bankruptcy question. .
