The annual meeting of Subscribers was afterwards held, at which only twelve representatives \vere present. Mr JO. Boddington was voted to ; the chair, and read the advertisement calling the meeting, which was for the purpose of electing two; Trustees in the room of Mr J. O.- Boddihgton and the JJev. W. E. Paige, who retired through effuxion of time, but were eligible for re-election. : The Chairman said that- although the special objeot of the meeting was the election of Trustees, it was deemed fitting to take advantage of their annual meeting to present them with a statement of the transactions ; and finances of the institution ~ to wlijcli they so liberally contributed to support. The Hospital, during thepast year, , had held • its position very, creditably. The Trustees and Exe,cutive i officers ■, had, however, to exert themselves to' a somewhat greater extent than usual to secure the necessary funds for its support, and it must be very gratifying to the subscribers and all connected with it to know they have been able to continue with voluntary aid alone,' arid' had not had to call upon the local bodies for assistance, (Hear, hear.) The balance sheet was read and showed- receipts' balance in Bank £4l 14s fid; subscriptions, £258 14s 4d; Subsidy from Government £271 7s 8d; patients fees £6los. Total—£s7B fis 6d. Expenditure: —By salaries' and wages £224 12s Gd; rations £16713 s 9d: medicine <k, £47 6s 4d; furnishing, fencing &c., £9l4s sd; balance credit, £47 9s fid. Total—£s7B 6s 6d.
The result compared favorably with the preceding year, tlio expenditure though' somewhat in .exoesß was covered by the increased subscriptions.
Tho Chairman explained that as they were aware, some seven months ago the then custodian resigned and had been succeeded by Mr Williams, and his assistants Mr and Mrs Gwynne, The Trustees were well satisfied at the way the Hospital had been conducted under Mr Williams' charge.; Dr Hoskinga also expressed himself as highly satisfied with him. Mr Williams had proved himself a skilled attendant,, and showed a kind disposition to the patients, many of whom had expressed their thankfullnoss for it. Dr. Hosking had attended the Hospital during the past year in his usual able manner. He had had .some difficult cases under his hands. One in particular they might remember, where a man was brought in shot through both legs. There had been a consultation of three doctors, aud it was thought amputation would be necessary. Tho subject, however, had declined being operated upon, preferring to; take his chance of recovery. Thanks to tho good constition of the man, and the skill of the surgeon, the patient had pulled through, and left the hospital, There were many other instances of surgical skill, which need not be detailed. The grounds of the Hospital had been greatly improved, and Mr Williams had in .many ways added to the conveniences of the internal arrangements of the building. With the kind assistance of its many friends, and continued efforts on the. part of. the executive officers, the Trustees hoped to continue the Hos pital ad a self-Supporting institution, (Hear, hear,) He formally hloved the adoption of the balance-sheet, and stated that their financial year did not end till March 81st, when the proper balance-sheet would be prepared, and duty submitted to the Government auditors, The present statement was a record of their transactions since they last met, twelve months ago, this meeting being compulsory, Mr Lowes thought the annual meeting should be postponed until. April, when the proper balance sliest duly audited could be presented. The Chairman pointed out that the Act made it compulsory for the Trustees to, convene the annual ■ meeting upon the second Thursday in January, although their financial year did not end till three months later. He thought there was no doubt that an amended Act would be brought in next session, when that and many other anomalies would be removed,
After some further discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Lowes, that the balance sheet be received. ELECTION OF TRUSTEES.. The Chairman said their next business was the election of two Trustees.' He would thank 'them to proceed 1 with the nominations. Mr - W, Lowes moved, and Mr R. Wilsone seconded! that tlio retiring Trustees, Mf. J. 0. Boddington and the Rev W. E.'Piiige, be Te-elected. being no othernomination, the motion was put by the Secretary and carried unanimously. The Chairman thanked those pre< sent for this mark of their confidence in the management, ' He should continue to take the same interest in managing the affairs of the subscribers as he had done in former years, and hoped the institution - would maintain the high standard it now Md.
■ Mr Lowes expressed a iiopd that tjie're-ajeoiipji f/f the two Trustees Would li'e'W&iV'as 1$ of; thanks' to tliem 'for their Vyice's, instead of moving a formal vote. The Chairman said it was 'very pleasing indeed to know that .'the subscribers appreciated their services, and hij tlpk?<| them for so palpable a proof. ! ' '" The remarks of the. Chairman were endorsed by the Bey. W. E. Paigo, and the meeting terminated'.' - ;
