Charitable Aid Boards.
Timaru, October IC, A.anit todeeida the question of liability of the Charitable Aid Boards under section 7i of tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Act is now proceeding between the Otago Benevolent Institute, plaintiffs, and the Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, defendants. A femalo pauper with two children, who had been on the hands of the defendants for about a year, left for Otago in May, 1887. The Otago Board claims 10s per week from the defendants for her maintenance. Since then tho defendants had paid 10s per week for six months under an agreement between the two chairmen, and will now dispute, on several grounds, their alleged liability to pay for any longer term. Somo evidence was taken here to-day to be forwarded to Dimedin.
A Narrow EscapeAuckland, Octobei" 10. News from Dargavillo states that a man named John Begley had a narrow escape of his life on Wednesday last. A railway train was nearing Maropia, when Begloy was discovered by tlio brakesman (Rhodes) lying asleep some distance oil' with his head across the line. The brakes were put down, bat it was impossible to stop the train, and Rhodes at a great risk let himself down in front of tho leading wheel, and when the train approached kicked the man off the rail. The box of the carriage caught Begley by tho shoulder, and threw him a few feet, breaking his collar-bone.
Important to Company Promotors." Dunedin, October 16. Mr Justico Williams delivered a judgment of importance to Company promoters and others in Charabors to-day, William Nahr and others applied to havo thoir names removed from tho register of shareholders of tho Waveatea Gold Mining Company, His Worship said tho caso must bo determined on the wording of the application for shares if there was a contract contained. In the caso of Nahr the application is to tho directors c£ an existing company for shares in that company, and the agreement was to accept the shares allotted, subject to the rules of tho Company. Now, at tho time of this application the Company was not constituted, there wero no directors and no rules. This allotment was, therefore, not in effect what was asked for. Ho asked for something which could not and was not given him, but something else was given him which lie is unwilling to accept after the formation, He did nothing whioh committed him to the acceptance of the shares, and his name ought to bo removed from the register, Order accordingly,
Criminal Sessions. Wanoakui, October 10. it the criminal sessions to-day, Thos. Perry was charged with having on August 3rd, entered the dwelling of Augusto Mundt and stealing the sum of 10s, Ho ploaded not guilty, After some lengthy evidonco the jury retired with a recommendation to morcy on account of youth, and because there had been great temptation. His Honor tho Chief Justice took into consideration tbo recordation to mercy and passed a lenient scntenco of nine months' hard labour in the Wanganui gaol.
Wanganui Boating Club. J Wanganui Ootober 16.''' Tho annual meeting of the Wanganui Boating Club was held to night, whon tho election of officors took place,' President, S, T. Fitzherbort; Vice President, W. Alexander; captain, Ward Butler; [deputy-captain, Pe,tor Sim. It was resolved that tho Club purchaso two double sculling stump outriggers, and that the Club bo represented at the general meeting of the Amateur Bowing Association at Wellington. The balance sheot showed credit balance of £2B, and outstanding J subscriptions £27.

Auckland, Wednesday, The Tramway Company has not been able to como to a definite decision as to the proposals submitted by Mr Price on behalf of theßoßton Company to substitute eleotrioity for horse-power on its tramways. The Auckland Tramway Company with a view to having all the information possible. beforo effecting so great a revolution in their operations, have placed themselves in communication with the directors of the Spraguc Electrical Works, New York.
