Burned to Death.
Duxedin, October 15, At the inquest on Thomas Maloney, who was burnod to death by tho fire at the houso of Michael Fahey on Sunday morning, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The evidence showed thero had been somo drinking going on. Mrs Fahey retired to bed, leaving a candle burning in her room; Maloney and Fahey stopped up smoking and were about to retire when tho fire broke out. Maloney, after getting outside, appears to have gone back to seo if all the others had got out. Mrs Fahey shows no signs of improvenont, aud her case is considered hopeless.
Bankruptcy Proceedings, Dunedin, October 15. In a bankruptcy sitting to-day, Mr Justice Williams remarked, m the caso of J. W. Cotton, a racehorse trainer, that the bankrupt had carried on a gambling business. Ha did not think the Act was intended to relievo men who got into difficulties by gambling, and though a discharge was recommended by the creditors, he declined to make an order.
