Constable Carr's Removal.
The Carr-Pepper case.at Otaki is;-,':^ -% causing some stir in the district asit ;V is considered the Constable did not. ;'i)M; get justice and the following petition^, -o'; ? has been sent'to the Chief Commiß-'S'::.V ? . sioner of Police:—Wo, the widersigned residents of■'; Otaki, and [ ~-s : y., neighborhood, respectfully,;re'quesK':!;?':'; that you will be 1 pleased lo'direotHUat an official enquiry he held into 'all the circumstances, attending the Garr- ■ ■■ : :'. The New Zealand Cup. Just a year ago we uiadeanattempt, of which, with the lii»lit of subsequent events, we are.by no means ashamed, to predict the winner of New Zealand Cup of 1887, and perhaps this may lis an opportune timo to roview the prospeota of the candidates still engaged in the big handicap of 1888. Last yoar.wo had to deal with what was admittedly'a very open race,'and yet we succeeded in including the first and second in our selection of half a dozen, and rccarded tho fact that wo apprehended some danger from the horse that ultimately filled tho other/ place, Wcnrc inclined to think tbfll task we have undertaken to-day &■)' somewhat easier one; but wo can hardly hope at this stage, to go'niuch nearer the mark, and—to mako use of terms we see employed in connection with test matches in other brauchos of sport-we shall he quito content for Ibepresent'to'reduco tho thirty-five "possibles "■ tp:.liu]f a dozen "probabies" With this end'iii view, we will take a:cur'spry glance at tho raco as it stands just now. Tho acceptance, as' everyone expected, rather from the indifference of the field than the tuerite of the handicap, was a capital ono, and so far none of tho hoises that / made the second payment have with- ' drawn from the list, Piobably none * of them will, until tho substantial % payment due noxt month (.hall lead to ' the wholesale, weeding out, Wo oxpect to see Strenuous, British Lion, Phormium Tonax, St Malo, Jet d'Eau, Gipsy Prince, G'uirasnier,Engagemont, A *>\ stage, and it is quite.on j the .<ards(i : - that Escutchoon, Sommeil, £orraine,- : ™•': St. Janios, Loopold, Bedwood,J3ori-of- •? a-Gun, Bavenswing, .Vandal,-and Exchange will go ho further, with ' thtr ; '## tlie ;^ :&ewe"hawia^ race} ; and! Carbine, Boreafdrd, ~ . : St. iCiaii', Ruby, Ohairi Bhot/BiclP • : roond,,Snapshot, Manton, Wolverine, - : and Hiko-a really nice little field for the New Zealand Cup of 1888. Commencing with ,r Mt Stead's represbnta- ■;;■'' lives, and knowing little or nothing of theconditions, of the Yaldhursl horses, we havo a growing preference ; Wor Sextant, This horse went all to iypieccs before the last cup, and won ;r meat of bis races when only half prepared, but .fit and well ho is undoubtcdly a good one, and should Mason bo pleased with his condition . on the day ho will certainly beat his ' stablo companions. There is no dony« .; ing the fact that Artillery is allotted a weight of which ho is thoroughly the master, but our latest accounts of his work at Riccarton are not very encouraging, and at present prices and under present oircarastanoea we regard Mr Butler's horse as one of the very \ ; ..: worst investments in the race.' With ijL, Springstou and Silvermark at level W weights wo prefer the latter. Last " season neither of this pair.showed ,1' anything like Cup form;'but wo fanoy Silvermark is capable of moro improvement than tho Autumn Handicap winner, and the additional year will be all in favor of Mr Goodman's
' horse. Carbine is set a great task to win with Tst 91b, but thonhe is a V,great colt, and we firmly believe wl that if he should remain in New Zenland and go to the post, ho will beat all the tried horses, Lastyear Maxim ,■' ■ could certainly have won with 7st Gib, and wo believe Carbine to be every : bit as good as Mr Stead's colt, while ■■;.., tho field this year will hardly bo so . strong. Beresford has nothing to recommend him with 7st 81b, 221b ■ : more than tho weight under which bo ■ succumbed to Lochiel and Gipsy ''•' King last year, and St. Clair, good little hoist) that he is,, never seems quite at borne on theßiccarton course, "■. Euby will not get two miles, even in very moderate company, and wo do
• not believn for a minute that tbc much-lauded Chain Shot will ever # display a liking for a long journey. Richmond may turn out the best of x Mr Redwood's lot, but it will he safe 1 to write of the Nelson division when we Beo them Join? good work 'on the ground, In the meantime) \it arc hot inclined to think they will play a very important part in our ,y November carnival, Snapshot has IK boen a good deal over-ratal in sonic ", ■ quarters, and, with weight and ovorything else in his favor, we should be' very much surprised (o seo him filling a place, Manton is n colt we shall watch with a great deal of interest. He gives one the impression of having grown a trifle coarse, and he is, undoubtedly, a clumsy mover; but if he has made the improvement that was predicted for him last season, he .. will prove a v?ry dangerous customer, and at this stage it will be well to treat him with respect, We are not very much taken with Wolverine, but Hiko is a candidate that has just begun to attract attention, and having regard to the ability of the party behind the brother to Waitiri,. wo shall keep this horso on our side for the present, and in selecting half-a-to supply the winner of the •jjfiest New Zealand Cup shall take (or Lochiel), Carbine, Man- '',' ton, Hiko,. and the very doubtful jjbtarters, Lorraine and Exchange— Times,
