GREYTOWN.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Miss Agnes Haigh for some years past one of our most efficient pupil teachers at the Oreytown Public School has, through ill health, been compelled to send in her resignation to the Education Board. Yesterday morning's down train ■'l\ convoyed two Greytownians bound j^-^or" the diggings," (Messrs T, Udy and Kennedy); there are others who talk of flitting in the same direction. Yesterday afternoon at Greytown, : a well-known Native named Martini -jjlTe Ore, Lieutenant of the Papawai Eifle Volunteer corps, died after a lingering illness of some months dur-' ation, The usual demonstration (tangi) followed as a uiattor of course, and doubtless his funeral will he conducted with military honors, The present appearance of tho fruit trees in this district promise a hearty : yield, provided tbe withering south wind (so usual at this period of the year) withholds its blasting influence. Mr Hart Udy (the present Mayor) moved by tho solicitations of his friends and supporters has notified his intention to contest tho coming Mayoral election. This announcement will doubtless be grrtifying to those ratepayers who believe in the Munioipol oconoiny already achieved under Mr Udy's administration and, in the event of his re-election it is believed that the coming year of office Iwill witness the work of retrenchment parried out to a greater extent.
