Wairarapa North County Council
ENGINEER'S REPORT. Masterton Riding, Masterton to Waimata road.—The permanent men on this line are engaged iu preparing what material the funds,at ray disposal will permit of my Parting into the road for repairs to its surface during the spring. The exceptionally light casualties during the winter may, I hope, enable ine to devote a considerable portion of the sum allocated ill the estimates for contingencies, to the purpose of additional repairs and help materially to strengthen portions of the line which stands much iu need of assistance, and which under the ordinary course of events would have had to stand over until next season before receiving aiiy extraordinary attention. The temporary rabbit proof fence enclosing Messrs Whatman Bros, property on the new deviation line, contract No 84; has been completed in a substantial and satisfactory manner, so that the contractor can iuow proceed with his work of raising the former fence and filling in the gully at Lis convenience. Messrs Brift. and Cameron liavo duly signed their coijtraot, Nosi 84 and 85, and are prepared to commence operations in the course, of a day orso. In the matter of sureties Mr JBritt will wait on the* Council at its present sitting with a view to making such arrangements as the Council may think necessary to fulfil to their satisfaction this condition of his contract.
Castlepoint Biding, Masteiton to Waimata Road.—The prospecting for and testing of stone, carried oat under my directions, between Mungapakelm and Tenui lias been attended with very satisfactory results, So far as' my tests have enabled me to judgo, it 'is probable that stone of superior quality and in large quantities is obtainable in positions which cau be conveniently commanded from tbo road, at suitable intervals along the whole length proposed to be metalled. The result of the discovery of a _ good quality of stono in the positions above stated will so materially cheapen the cost of the work as to render it possible to extend the lengths in the present proposed contract, so as to embrace the whole of the portions of the road which hitherto have proved the sticking points during the winter season, and will open in future the permaueut communication between Tenui and the .Masterton district for wheel traffic throughout all seasons of the year. The speciflcations &c., for this work were completed yesterday and I would suggest thai tonders be invited to close at noon on Saturday the 22nd inst., and that a meeting of the Works Committee be convened for that dato to deal with thom.
Tho grants voted by tho Castlepoint Board for road repairs on this and the Castlopoint Section of the road have been duly expended with considerable temporary advantage to the places affected by the outlay. I fear, howover, that the springy naturo of the fascine bed niay seriously militate against the rapid consolidation of the stone about to be laid down, and prove more'or less injurious to the ultimate permanence of the road surface. To guard as much as possible, however, against the evil, I mil direct that the present coveting of soft rock, &p.. be completely removed before the stone, is deposited and spread over fhe fascines, and failing this being sufficient that the fascines also be removed.
• Alfredton Biding, Eketahuna to Tenui Road,—Eketaliuna to Tiraumea Section',-contract No 18 road formation Las, after considerablo delay, been completed, Owing, however, to several important omissions by the contractor in cqnnection with the execution of thqwork and wljicli he cannot now see his way to rectify, I have, subject to the Cijunpil's'' approval, raadg. dedup£ipns;:'inqludjng' i} charge of £ 3 8s fqi: inspect|ppa (smce the expiration of the. Contract time for completion) amounting to XQ Is and recommend that tiip balanoe of the contract amount be paid over to tlieOontractotr and the work taken off his hands.
Opalti to Manawatu Eoad, —In compliance with my -instructions from the Council I have given orders to'the permanent men on that section of the line to execute repairs to the road diversion at 82 miles 10 chains, in accordance'ivit|i'-.'mjr' uiidMthKiug with Me JWliop ral#o ttato. This work I have little doubthiisbeon completed by now, Ihaveio., 0, E. BltEMNill, Engineer,
